As parents, teachers and staff, we are interested in doing our part to promote equity and end racism in constructive, supportive ways.

March is Women’s History Month! Check out the resources we’ve compiled for you below. And because this month’s newsletter is going out a bit early, Black History Month is still in full swing! Check out last-month’s newsletter for Black History Month resources. Also, check out The Wise Channel on YouTube for a collection of funny, short, educational videos celebrating both Black History Month and Women’s History Month! These videos are sure to get you and your little ones giggling.

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. This year’s themes are “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” and #BreakTheBias.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts will hold a day-long virtual festival on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day. A schedule of events can be found here, concluding with a 5:30pm livestreamed performance by R&B/soul vocalist Afi Soul.

Washington.org has a list of DC-area events, festivals and virtual pop-ups to celebrate Women’s History Month. These include the National Museum of Women in the Arts online exhibit of the photography of Mary Ellen Mark, details of a virtual Women Filmmakers Festival at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and a Shop Made in DC curated art show featuring up to 100 DMV women artists, panel discussions and popups with emerging DC makers and artists called “She DC,” which will run throughout the month of March.

International Women's Day began more than a century ago, with the first official celebration taking place in 1911, when women came together to demand the right to vote and fight against discrimination in the workplace. Over the years, the celebration has grown both within the U.S. and internationally. Visit the National Women’s History Museum, on online, virtual, "museum without walls," for the full story behind Women’s History Month, which began as a small weeklong celebration in Santa Rosa, California in 1978. Hyde Addison teachers have compiled a list of their favorite books to celebrate Women’s History Month here.

Two Brave Girls Virtual Storytime videos from the Women’s History Museum include read alouds of a bunch of great books, including Rosie Revere, Engineer, by Andrea Beaty, and When Harriet Met Sojourner, by Catherine Clinton. Your family might also enjoy this video of academy award winning actor, producer and writer Lupita Nyong’o reading her book Sulwe, a fable in which a shooting star helps a bright young girl born "the color of midnight" learn to embrace her beauty, inside and out.
