GUIDANCE NOTES
October is Bullying Awareness and Prevention month and in Guidance this week and last, we have been learning about bullying and ways to stand up against, and prevent it. A lot of detail went into these discussions, but here is a brief summary:
Four Forms of Bullying
cyber, physical, verbal, and social/emotional (relational aggression).
Four "D's" of Bystander Intervention:
Direct - directly telling the bully to stop.
Distract - invite the victim to go play somewhere else.
Delegate - let an adult know here at school and/or at home.
Delay - check in with the victim after witnessing the bullying to see if they are okay and how you can help.
As we're having these conversations, students have recalled past and/or present experiences and have wanted to share. Within our conversations we also distinguish the differences between being rude, being mean, and bullying. Although there are differences between these terms, none of them are okay and all need some form of restoration (apologies, self reflection, ect).
I felt it was important to let you all know in case you're hearing these terms in conversations with your students at home. Please let me know if I can be helpful in any way.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND: COACHES WANTED!
Odyssey of the Mind for WCS is beginning mid December for middle schoolers, and in January for our k-2 team. Odyssey of the Mind encourages critical thinking, problem solving in real time, cooperation and communication in a group setting within the context of expressing creativity. Team members, seven people per team, develop a deep sense of camaraderie, friendship, and self competence as they create a unique performance to present at a statewide tournament in March.
Teams usually meet once per week, after school, over approximately 10 weeks. Coaches work together to come up with strategies to support the teams and pool resources. As we plan for the upcoming season if there is any parent, caregiver, grandparent, teacher/school staff, or young adult with an interest in coaching a third and/or fourth grade team please reach out to Anita Lichman at anita624@hotmail.com. There is support available for you if you should take on the challenge!

- Please remember to have your student check the Lost & Found- our collection is OVERFLOWING! All unclaimed items will be donated in November.
- Feminine products are always available in the nurse's outer office for students who need them. Students do not need to ask permission, and can just pop into the back door and access what they need from the supply closet- no questions asked!
- Basketball sign-ups are happening! If your 6th, 7th or 8th grader would like to try out for our middle school basketball teams they can sign up with Mr. Hutchings.
