Mr. Barber’s 4th grade classes are working on a Caribbean work song project using “Pay Me My Money Down”. Each class will be working in small groups to arrange and compose parts to this work song. Performances will be recorded and posted to Mr. Barber’s website around the beginning of March.
Band
The first before school Tawanka 4th Grade Beginner Band rehearsal is March 8. Rehearsals will be held before school every Thursday until we show off at the Spring Concert here at Tawanka on May 7. Right now, the 4th Grade Beginners are leaning how to play their instruments and read music well enough to play the band music at the first band rehearsal on March 8. Tell your child to SYBYPI (Say it before you play it…) and practice 15 minutes 5 days per week so that band will be easy and fun!

Kindergarten
During the month of February, the kindergarten classes engaged in weather related activities, as well as, graphing for Groundhog Day. Next, there was a great deal of excitement on the 100th Day of school...dressing up was so much fun for everyone! Students moved from activity to activity counting a variety of supplies and materials, building with 100 cups, 100 blocks and other assorted items. Then came Valentine's Day with card writing, crafts and other theme activities related to kindness, feelings, sharing and hearts.
1st Grade
February was a fun-filled month for First Grade!
100th Day--First grade classes celebrated the 100th day of school on February 14th with STEM stations and an estimation challenge. Children worked collaboratively with partners. They used a variety of materials with 100 pieces of each material to create and construct.
Children also made an educated estimation after examining 10 different containers, each holding different items. The items varied from pennies and crayons to beads and Legos. The children picked which container they thought held exactly 100 items.
Mrs. Klaiber also visited the First Grade Pod to congratulate and hand out "Unbee-lievable Bees" for students in first who read 100 and 200 books for our 100 Book Challenge program! Several students read 100 or 200 books! Congratulations!
2nd Grade
We celebrated 100 days in 2nd grade with reading, writing and counting activities throughout the day.
2nd grade has also begun our science unit on soil and we had some hands on fun with local soil and worms.
3rd Grade
Time is MARCHING on, and third graders have been busy strengthening skills. All classes worked on informative writing. In the next marking period, we will explore persuasive pieces. In Reading, students have been making efforts to include text evidence when responding, and show proof of comprehension with story details in writing. In Math, we are shaping up on our geometry skills. In Science, “Earth Materials” were introduced, and it really ROCKS! Ask us about rocks and minerals. We are looking forward to springing the clocks ahead, and sharing good times with peers outside.
4th Grade
Mrs. Ross' 2nd grade class and Mrs Gartenmayer's 4th grade class buddied together to solve a problem of designing a perch so anyone could see the Super Bowl above anyone else. The supplies given to each pair were pipe cleaners, cupcake holder, 36 inches of tape, 1 cotton ball, and 2 index cards. They were designing a solution to their problem through trial and error. Many perches were successful in holding a person (cotton ball) from its highest point. Being engaged in this activity allowed the students to have the conversation coming up with the perfect plan to see the championship game. Go Eagles!!!!
EarlyAct Club
The EarlyAct Club is selling bracelets to coincide with Dr. Seuss week…proceeds will be donated to The Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia.
Empowered Eagles
Tawanka Elementary is proud to announce that we have earned our SWPBIS tier I banner! On February 22, 2018, Tawanka participated in a School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET) assessment in which students, staff, and administrators were interviewed about their knowledge of our school behavior expectations. We are so proud to be recognized by our state PBIS team for our successful implementation.
Some key features of the SWPBIS program at Tawanka include: Tawanka Tokens, The Principal’s 200 Board, Pick a Chip Friday, and positive calls home. Thank you for your support at home and for encouraging your child to be respectful, responsible, and safe! Go Empowered Eagles!
