Dear KCSD community,
Join us on April 19 at the Ross Ragland Theater to celebrate eight KCSD staff members who are this year's Crystal Apple Award winners! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the gala starts at 7 p.m.
The program opens with the JROTC Color Guard and the National Anthem performed on trumpet by Henley High's Jacob Bruner. Other performances include student choral groups from Merrill and Stearns elementary schools, and a Henley High School percussion ensemble.
The highlight of the evening will be introducing you to our eight Crystal Apples:
Meghan Miller, Lost River Jr/Sr High School
Mark Teel, Henley Middle School
Mark Teel, Henley Middle School’s head custodian, can fix – and clean – nearly anything, and he always has a smile for students. He’s one of the first people they see in the morning. He greets them in the lunch room and in the hallways, and if they’re on his basketball team, he’s there for them on the court. Read more
Cynthia Fee, Henley Elementary School
Cynthia Fee has wanted to be a teacher since she cut out paper dolls from shopping catalogs and lined them up to play school. “She has a gift for finding the strengths in each student and pushing them to achieve their personal best,” says co-worker Cassie Carlisle. Read more
Maggie Hill, Shasta Elementary School
Maggie Hill spent years volunteering at Shasta Elementary School – in the classroom, on field trips, for fundraisers. If it needed to be done, she did it. Her children graduated after seven years as Scorpions. Hill didn’t. Instead of volunteering, she took a full-time job with the school as a paraprofessional, working with children on reading, math, and other skills. Read more
Lori Nealy, Ferguson Elementary School
After 33 years of teaching, Lori Nealy still looks forward to each day in her kindergarten classroom at Ferguson Elementary School – the hugs, the laughter, and yes, even the tattling. “I am extremely blessed to be a part of these students’ educational paths,” she says of her long career in education. Melinda Downing, DO Transportation
As a bus driver trainer for the Klamath County School District, Melinda Downing is responsible for ensuring drivers meet all requirements and safety protocols for transporting students to and from school and activities. “She goes way beyond expectations to make sure students arrive at school and home safely, putting in hours long before and after her scheduled time.” Read more
Molly McAuliffe-Hepper, Henley High
Molly McAuliffe-Hepper’s students say it best:
- “She understands that we all come from different places and that we all go through our own battles.”
- “She sets us up for success and helps us prepare for our future.”
- “She is never afraid to be real and straight up with us and push us to be better people.” Read more
Rob Izzett, Mazama High School
No one sits the bench in Rob Izzett’s band. “A band is only as good as its weakest musicians so the challenge is to do everything I can to help them achieve no matter where on the talent spectrum they might fall,” Izzett explained last month as members of Mazama High School’s concert band packed up their instruments after an hour-long practice. ROSS RAGLAND FILM SERIES FEATURES BONANZA P.E. TEACHER
Bonanza P.E. teacher Jason Hardrath last summer climbed Washington state's 100 highest peaks -- known as the Bulger List -- in a quest to be the first person to reach 100 FKTs (Fastest Known Times).
From Jason: "This is a story of a man finding his way in the mountains, a story from the heart of a kid that couldn't sit still, and beyond that, a story that gives each of us, kid or adult, permission to take aim at whatever dream or goal we feel calling to us."
From the film's description: "Growing up, Jason Hardrath was teasingly called “the energizer bunny.” Diagnosed with ADHD, he often felt isolated and defeated when he was unable to meet the expectations of his family, his peers, and society. But in 7th grade, he learned that when he set physical goals — no matter how small — his cluttered, impulsive mind became clear.
Today, Hardrath is the person with the most FKTs (Fastest Known Times) in the world. His goal was to be the first person to reach 100 FKT records and inspire his students to reimagine what they are capable of.
This film explores what FKTs are. Why are people drawn to these obscure, perhaps somewhat arbitrary records? What happens when something goes wrong out there? Or when it goes marvelously right?
But at the heart of this story is one man’s pursuit to prove to himself that even when others can’t see it, the right path is the one you create for yourself."
KCSD ROBOTICS TEAMS TO COMPETE AT WORLDS
FFA STUDENTS DO WELL AT STATE
Klamath County School District was well-represented last month at the Oregon FFA State Convention in Redmond. FFA students from Lost River, Bonanza, Mazama, and Henley took home competition honors, attended workshops, served on committees, and participated in interviews. Eleven students received the Oregon FFA State Degree, a coveted and difficult to earn honor that requires, among other things, at least 30 FFA activities, 25 hours of community service, 360 hours of agriculture instruction and a supervised agricultural experience in which the member has earned or invested $1,500 and worked at least 300 hours.
