Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 57 Community,
I hope this message finds you all well and in good health. As we navigate through the various challenges of a given school year, I want to take a moment to express our collective gratitude to the unsung heroes of our district – our facilities and transportation teams. Their tireless efforts, especially during recent inclement weather events, have been nothing short of remarkable. Thanks to their dedication, our school facilities have remained safe and accessible, ensuring that both students and staff can arrive securely. Our transportation team, in particular, has gone above and beyond to ensure that our students are transported to and from school safely, regardless of the challenging weather conditions. Their commitment to our community's well-being is a testament to their professionalism and care.
On a celebratory note, I am thrilled to share that our top ranked MHS wrestling team is gearing up for the regional and state championships in the coming weeks. The dedication and effort they have displayed this season is inspiring to us all. As they prepare for these significant competitions, let’s rally behind them and offer our support and best wishes. Let’s go Mustangs!
In parallel with these exciting developments, we are in the midst of our budget development process. This critical task demands a delicate balance between being responsive to the needs of our taxpayers and striving to move the needle to accomplish the goals identified in our Strategic Plan. Our aim is to ensure that our financial planning and allocations reflect our commitment to providing a high-quality education while being mindful of the economic realities of our community. We are dedicated to transparency, efficiency, and innovation in our budgeting process, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the educational experience for all our students. Information about the 2024-2025 budget and a schedule of upcoming Finance Committee meetings can be found on our District website using this link.
Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement with our school community. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of our students as we work towards a preferred future.
Warm regards,
Stephen D. Marquis, PhD.

SeaPerch Challenge at MHS
Massabesic High School Students are gearing up for the SeaPerch Challenge with the invaluable support of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Generously providing kits with materials, tools, and instruction booklets, as well as volunteer guidance, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has empowered 24 students on 7 teams, to construct their own Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Scott Swett, a technical education teacher at MHS, highlighted the unique hands-on experience that challenges students to build ROVs from scratch, fostering skills like soldering, drilling, measuring, and troubleshooting. These students will soon put their creations to the test, and one outstanding team will represent Massabesic High School at the 2024 Seacoast SeaPerch Challenge on April 5 at the University of New Hampshire. The challenge includes navigating obstacle courses, executing recovery missions, and presenting technical reports; providing students with a platform to practice deep thinking and problem-solving skills. NJROTC instructor Captain Douglas Howell emphasized his role as a student guide, encouraging critical thinking and hands-on learning in an environment where there's "no illusion that the teacher knows all." RSU 57 invites all to support these aspiring engineers and innovators during the SeaPerch Challenge. Good luck, Mustangs! (pictured above)
Engineering is Elementary
Fourth graders at Shapleigh Memorial wrapped up their Engineering is Elementary Unit on Designing Knee Braces! Students learned about biomedical engineering as they created a knee brace that would help to support an injured knee in an effort to make it move like a healthy knee. Students worked in cooperative groups and used the Engineering Design Process to imagine, place, create, and improve their knee braces.
Girls Basketball Supports Lewiston Community
NASCAR at Lyman Elementary
NASCAR has arrived at Lyman Elementary! Students in Mr. Penley's PE class worked together to successfully navigate the racetrack set up in the gym! Great fun was had by all!

January Model Mustang Awards
It is with great excitement and pride that we announce the recipients of the Model Mustang Staff Award for the month of January! This award is a tribute to those outstanding individuals who embody the qualities of a true “Model Mustang”; they inspire, lead, foster positivity, persevere, and excel in all that they do. Each Model Mustang was nominated by colleagues who took the time to acknowledge and celebrate their coworkers’ exceptional contributions to our district. Their hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for the positive impact they have within RSU 57! Congratulations, all!
