Grade School News
News About the News! By Grace Cooper & Mrs. Chiu’s Class
Students from all of the 4th & 5th-grade classes wondered, what does it truly mean to be a journalist? Mark Nelson was going to answer their questions in a different way than they expected.
On November 16, 2022, the Corbett Grade School Longhouse was packed with students in the 4th and 5th grades. Mark Nelson had come in his free time to answer questions the young journalists had.
For example, a couple of students in Mrs. Meadows and Ms. Oakley’s classes asked, “What is the highest wind speed you’ve ever seen?” Another student from Mr. Young’s class asked, “What's the hardest weather to forecast?” And, a student from Mrs. Chiu’s class asked, “What's the longest stretch of rain you’ve ever seen?”
The questions were all answered accordingly. Mark Nelsen said, “The highest winds I've ever seen are 120 mph close to the vista house.” … “The hardest weather to forecast is snow because the temperature has to be exactly the same as we see it.” …“The longest rainfall I've ever seen was in 1996, it went on for about 3 days straight!”
Meanwhile, Students documented all of the new facts they were learning in their memo pads, the information was vital! It may not be vital for some but for others it was crucial.
A student from Mr. Bunte’s class asked, “What has been the scariest time you had to forecast the weather?” Mark Nelsen quickly replied, “Well, it was actually when I was in California. The producers made me forecast from a shark tank! They said that they just fed the sharks but I still had an adrenaline rush.”
All of the 4th and 5th-grade classes were excited for this chance to meet a local famous person. Everyone wanted his autograph and most were lucky to get a fist bump from him.

Books And Donuts: A Third Helping!
Corbett Middle School’s book club is back! We formed the B.A.D. Readers (Books and Donuts) club in 2018 as a way of challenging our more advanced readers with higher level texts such as Slaughterhouse 5, All the Pretty Horses, and Cold Mountain. We had a good run for a year and a half, and then Covid hit and threw a monkey wrench into the works. But we’re back!
This year we’ve got a good core group of 15 students, and we hope to add more as the year progresses. We started by reading A Long Way Gone, the memoir of a childhood soldier from Sierra Leone. After reading the book, we met to discuss our feelings about the writing, to rate the book, and to power through two dozen delicious donuts. A Long Way Gone earned an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 donuts.
We’re currently reading West With Giraffes, a Depression era coming-of-age tale featuring a boy, a journey west, and, you guessed it: two giraffes! Feel free to grab a copy yourself, read along with us, and send your thoughts to Mr. Houck, Mrs. Young or Mr. Leone. We’ll share them with the group when we meet before Winter Break, and we’ll eat a donut in your honor.High School News

I don't have Cody in class this year, but he always brought such enthusiasm to his Spanish class. Whatever activity we were doing, he would participate with gusto. I really appreciated his attention to details and enjoyed watching him have grammatical ah-ha moments. Thanks, Cody!--Ms. Thole

The New Landscape Committee is tasked with the cleanup and refreshing of the front planting beds of the grade school throughout the year to beautify and improve our school. This is a great opportunity to show our pride and appreciation for our school, teachers, staff and children.
When: Second Saturday of every month rain or shine (but not in the snow or ice) Next Saturday is December 10th.
Time: 9 am – 11 am (with enough volunteers and regular upkeep it should not take much time to keep it looking good).
Cost: only your time and any landscape tools you might have to help with the clean ups (i.e., rakes, blower, etc.).
How can I get involved? Please contact Amy Mowlds, VP of the PTA and mom of a Corbett Grade School student if you are interested in helping amy.skibbe@gmail.com or text at 503.970.7328.
Kids of a responsible age are welcome to come along and help. This is a lot of hand work and little hands can be great at pulling weeds. This will not only show our children our appreciation but show them what we can accomplish when we work as a team to better our Community.

From the Health Room
I am enjoying watching students in warm winter coats exclaiming over the
gusty east winds. Their resilience and ability to stay positive is inspiring.
Now is a great time to think about winter activities and staying active.
The American Heart Association (AHA) has given us some great ideas to
consider: Brisk walking or hiking, jogging or running, raking leaves,
shoveling snow, ice skating, sledding, cross-country skiing, and
snowshoeing.
The AHA reminds us to dress in layers and stay well hydrated. https://www.heart.org/
Please feel free to call the Health Room to check if your student is up to
date on their immunizations @ 503-261-4258.
Stay Strong and Healthy!
