ÉCKS - Updates from "Our House"
ACHIEVING SUCCESS TOGETHER - RÉUSSIR ENSEMBLE
October 20, 2020
Dear École Charlie Killam School Community,
It's great to connect with you again.
Our staff continues to do fantastic work in supporting students to be their best selves. Teachers are focused on the learning process and working to equip our students with tools and strategies to be successful. As always, we are proud of our staff for the work they do each day.
As you know, our students are part of cohorts for their learning and for their breaks. We have structured break times and have assigned cohorts specific zones when outside. This is in alignment with the guidelines that we are expected to follow by Alberta Health Services. We do our best to redirect students back to their zone if they happen to venture out but we are noticing an increase in the number of times we are having these conversations. We can understand the frustration that our students may have when they are unable to connect with their friends at break times. However, it is our expectation at ÉCKS and the expectation of Alberta Health Services that we follow the guidelines. In the event, students are frequently struggling with the expectation that they are to remain in their cohorts and their zones outside, we will need to connect with parents/guardians to discuss action plans and next steps planning. We will continue to remind our students about their responsibility as we all need to work together.

Daily Self Assessment Has Been Modified (Oct 8, 2020)
The Daily Self Assessment Checklist has been modified slightly, in order to provide some additional clarity about which symptoms require immediate isolation and which ones simply require students to stay home. The list of symptoms, etc. has not changed. If you click on the picture, it will take you to the link!
Responding to Student Illness
Alberta Health Services has released four very helpful new charts for parents. Here are the links to the four AHS charts:
How to respond if your child has one or more of these primary COVID-19 symptoms
How to respond if your child has one or more of these other COVID_19 symptoms
How long to stay home from school
Battle River School Division has also summarized the information into one chart that is posted on their website.
Switching from In-School Learning to At-Home Learning
Hey BRSD families! What are your plans for the second quarter of the school year? If you are considering a switch between At-Home Learning and In-Person Learning at school, please let the school administration know by the week of Nov. 2 to 6 at the latest. The second quarter begins November 18.
You can call the school at 780-672-7785 or email charliekillam@brsd.ab.ca. If we receive an email, we will follow up with a phone call.
Student - Parent - Teacher Conferences
Report Cards will be sent home on November 10, 2020.
When: November 19, 2020 (4:00 - 9:00)
How: As you know, student - parent - teacher conferences will look differently this year. Instead of in-person meetings, we will be doing them virtually through Google Meet.
Focus: The focus of this year’s conferences will be on connection. We want you, as parents / guardians, along with your child, to lead the conversation. We would like you to identify your child’s strengths, areas for growth, goals (academic, social, emotional) and strategies for success. It would be beneficial to discuss these with your child ahead of time.
Who: We are hopeful that parents / guardians, along with their child, can be part of the Google Meet. The Meet will be with your child’s homeroom teacher.
How: Your child’s homeroom teacher will send you a message through School Messenger. If you are interested in booking a conference appointment, you can reply directly to the School Messenger message. The teacher will then provide you with a 10-minute time and schedule a Google Meet invite for the evening of November 19th using your child’s school email address. We strongly encourage your child to present in the conversation. If your child is unavailable or you wish to provide us with an alternate email address to join Google Meet, please discuss this with your child’s homeroom teacher. If Google Meet is not available to you, please inform your child’s homeroom teacher and alternate plans can be made.
Next Steps Following Student - Parent - Teacher Conferences: Your child’s homeroom teacher will share the information you provide with the rest of the learning team. This information will be valuable when our staff engage in collaborative response to student learning. We can understand that you may wish to speak to a course-specific teacher other than your child’s homeroom teacher. As we value parent communication, we encourage you to reach out to your child's teachers at any point throughout the year to discuss student learning and student progress. You can find the links to email our teachers here.

Halloween Information
- Students need to arrive in costume in the morning and we encourage minimizing any accessories as we want to make sure all items make it safely home for the weekend. Please note: Students are not permitted to wear Halloween masks or bring weapon type accessories to school
- Keep costumes simple so students can move freely during breaks and Physical Education.
Students will be with their homeroom class and homeroom teacher for the afternoon. Each class will determine their own activities. Lastly, we ask that no treats are sent to share with friends or with the class at this time. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own snacks.
Thank you for your support and understanding! We will not be able to do a school-wide parade to show off costumes but we will be taking pictures and sharing those for our student body to see.
