Principal's Corner: Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!

Hello Hawks families,


And we're off!!...


The start of the 2022-2023 school year is underway and the CPHS faculty is geared up and ready for an amazing year filled with rigorous learning and high expectations for student growth and success!


September is a month of getting to know our students, building relationships, introducing students to classroom routines, and for students to slowly get back into the rhythm of school.


If you are looking for ways to stay involved this school year, we would love to have more parents join our Parent Advisory Council. The Parent Advisory Council meets monthly with the principal to offer feedback on school wide initiatives and to hear about upcoming events. We also serve as an unofficial PTA of sorts and will look for ways to help celebrate staff during appreciation weeks. If interested, please consider joining us for our first meeting of the school year on Wednesday, September 7th at 5:30pm in the main office.


We also have distributed Chromebook student devices, and ask that parents/guardians complete the Parent Acknowledgement Form that went home with your student. This year, student Chromebooks are being checked out to them via our library system and could include fines applied to students for lost or damaged devices. Please help reiterate to your student to be careful with their device, charge it nightly, and to be sure to bring the charger with them to school. If your student has a device from the previous year, please have them bring it into the office to avoid the fine.


In this edition of the Hawks Happenings monthly newsletter, we share with you information about our upcoming Open House event, school picture day, introductions of new staff, and much more.


We hope to see you all at our Open House event on Wednesday, September 14th at 6:00pm. This will be a great opportunity to meet and greet with all six of your students teacher in a miniaturized one hour bell schedule format. If you can bring your student, please do! We have ample space and they can serve as your guide from room location to room location. Your student's schedule and a map will be available for parents as well.

Picture Day! Monday, September 19th

Monday, September 19th we will have Leos Photography take our annual fall school photos. Picture packets will be available for students to pick up in the office the week of Sept. 12-16.

Sam Derting: High School Counselor (Le-Z)

Mr. Sam Derting has been a long time member of our CPHS Counseling Department as a Pathway Specialist. He has recently completed his counselor certification and will now be joining Ms. Silva-Ponds as a high school counselor for our school! Students with last name that start Le-Z will have Mr. Derting as their assigned high school counselor.

Edith Martinez: Pathway Specialist & Registrar

Ms. Edith Martinez will be moving from the role of assistant secretary to a Pathway Specialist and will also serve as our schools registrar. Her knowledge of our school and our systems will be incredibly useful as she works closely with both the back end of our Student Learning Management system (Skyward) and also directly with our students towards their post high school ambitions.

Joy Espinosa: English Teacher

Ms. Joy Espinosa will be joining our team as an English Teacher and Support Teacher, having served as an EL Paraeducator for both Sager Middle School and CPHS. Ms. Espinosa has a strong background in supporting all learners and will be able to apply her learned experiences into this new teacher role.

Case Rada: Social Studies Teacher

Mr. Case Rada is moving from the PE courts and Health classroom to being our 9th grade World History teacher alongside Mr. Diaz. Mr. Rada has a background and certification in social studies education and will also continue to be the 10th grade honors US History teacher as well.

Allison Collier: Math and Support Teacher

Ms. Allison Collier was previously supporting our students in an Academic Intervention role, and will be moving into the classroom this year as a Math, Access, and Academic Success teacher. Ms. Collier is also our Head Golf Coach!

Olivia Cerda: Assistant Secretary

Ms. Olivia Cerda was previously the Migrant Specialist for CPPS and has moved into the main office as our Assistant Secretary. Her fluency in Spanish and English will be a tremendous support to all of our families.

Robb Harrison: Choir and Musical Theatre Teacher

Mr. Robb Harrison is joining our staff as the Choir and Musical Theatre teacher. His background as an Opera performer and an experienced Choir teacher will help us grow our choir and theatre programs at both Sager Middle School and CPHS.

Jack Zilla: PE and Health Teacher

Mr. Jack Zilla is joining our staff as a PE and Health teacher, and also as our Head Football Coach. He has a tremendous amount of experience in all of these roles joining us after having been in the Olympia area for many years.

Monica Collins: Able 18-21 Program Teacher

Ms. Monica Collins is joining our staff as the 18-21 year old transition Able Program teacher. She brings a wealth of connections to local businesses and has a passion for ensuring our students are ready for meaningful work employment and successful independent living.

Michael Anderson: Life Skills Teacher

Mr. Michael Anderson is joining the CPHS staff as our Life Skills special education teacher. His background in working with diverse learners and in schools will help to strengthen our program with some of our most impacted students.

Kevin Reed: Culinary Teacher

Mr. Kevin Reed is joining the CPHS staff as our new Culinary teacher. Mr. Reed is excited to be joining our staff, making the move from the local food industry where he worked in several kitchens and restaurants.

Dr. Emily Rea: School Psychologist

We are super excited to welcome aboard Dr. Emily Rea as our School Psychologist. Dr. Rea has been a staple in the Walla Walla valley for many years and brings a wealth of knowledge with her background as a clinical psychologist.

The CP Way

Throughout the year, you might hear about something called 'The CP Way' and 'CP Strong'. These terms are part of our school wide effort to have common behaviors expected out of our students as well as our staff.


Our school is combining the CP Way with our tier 1 social emotional curriculum, Character Strong, to create mini lessons throughout the year around these central behavior expectations. Each month has a theme, and we will have our monthly newsletter share student recognitions centered around those themes. Our kick-off event for the students on CP Strong occurred during our school wide Hawk Day and we will keep using the three core concepts of "Own It, Team It, and Grow It" in as much of our school wide expectations as we can.

21st Century Program offers After School Activities

College Place High School is excited about our offering of various after school activities thanks to our 21st century program and coordinator, Abel Hernandez.


We have an After School Academic Lab called "Success 1.5" which will be a great resource for students and parents who would like their student to stay after school to get extra help with highly trained tutors. Additionally, fun activities such as indoor soccer, student empowerment clubs, and much more is being offered.

It Pays To Be a Hawk!

Gesa Credit Union is a partner with College Place High School and recently awarded the school a check over $8,000.00 dollars with it's Hawks Affinity Debit Card Program. This program allows purchases with every swipe to benefit the school directly!


Our Gesa student branch manager, Merelin Ramirez, and CTE Director Scott Reardon will be providing more information about how you can be a Hawks Affinity Debit Card member in the next edition of the Hawks Happening newsletter.

CP Community Partner: College Place Prevention Coalition

We want to hear from you!


Every year, the College Place Prevention Coalition asks the community of adults 18 years and older to participate in a survey from Washington State’s Community Prevention Wellness Initiative (CPWI). This survey looks at the community’s concerns related to youth substance use and mental health.


Survey results will be used to guide College Place Prevention Coalition’s work in developing effective substance abuse prevention programs for our youth and families in the community of College Place.


Surveys may be taken in English or Spanish. Surveys are completely anonymous.
