Hofstra Ballroom Dance Newsletter
Week of October 15th, 2017
My competitive kings and queens,
Ohhhh boy.
It's comp week, y'all.
As if midterms weren't stressful ENOUGH, now we have to compete in painful shoes and itchy costumes for a shiny piece of fabric!
What we do for you, ballroom. What we do for you.
Nah but really, COMP IS FUN. We eat lotsa snacks, meet new people, and placing in a comp has to be one of the best feelings in the world. We can't wait for our newbie competitiors to see what competitive ballroom is aaaalll about, and wish them tons of luck as well.
Plus, Princeton is GORGEOUS. Seriously. I remember when I used to watch the Cinderella Story movie with Hillary Duff and she wanted to go to Princeton, because that's where the princes go. MAYBE WE'LL MEET A PRINCE. OR HILLARY DUFF. (Both very unlikely.)
So, to prep for our meet and greet with Hillary Duff, let's see what practice we're gonna get into before we head on over to New Jersey:
- Monday Mock Competition Practice 6pm at the Multi-Purpose Room w/ Sergey
- Wednesday Mock Competition & LDE Practice 8pm at Netherlands North & South
- MANDATORY Thursday Mock Competition & LDE Practice 8pm at Netherlands North & South
- Friday Hair Party 5:30pm at Nassau Lounge
- Check out The Competitive Collective section if you're interested in competing!
- Check out The Social Butterfly section if you're interested in being a social member!
P.S. Please enjoy this photo from Halloweens past of our Public Relations coordinator, Angela as a movie star. Maybe she should pull out this dress for Standard/Smooth. Really, it'd work.
Keep jivin', y'all.

Monday: Competitive Meeting
Like, real different. Even the times are all screwy. But you know, that's why I make the calendar, so y'all don't have to read too hard.
If you do like reading though, nice. That's how you learn stuffs and get the knowledge. Trust me, I go to university.
So Monday, we will be having our first ever Mock Competition, running through each and every dance in costumes. Please show up at 6pm so you can put on your costumes and start promptly at 6:30 for Rhythm rounds.
So yeah, it's like a dress rehearsal, except totally not. You can't exactly rehearse winning, but we sure would like to try.
Additionally, Sergey will be appearing around 8pm to help us with our Standard/Smooth.
This way, we will have a comprehensive review of all the dances! I know, I know, you're welcome. How were we supposed to remember both of the rumbas anyway?!?
Wednesday: Competitive Meeting
Me. Too.
Now, we also have an event coming up. Yep, Latin Dance Explosion is the week after Princeton. Oooh boy. We're busy.
Luckily, we planned for both. We even booked two spaces for it. We're that crazy.
So, here's how you're Wednesday turn up is going to pan out:
- Jive 1hr (Yeah. We are gonna learn real Jive, and not just fast Swing. It's different. Promise.)
- Mock Comp 30min
- LDE "Thriller" Practice 30min
As excited as I am for Princeton, I'm soooo excited for LDE. Fun routines, cool costumes, PLUS YOUR NON-BALLROOM BUDDIES GET TO HANG. And who wouldn't want to hang with us?
Thursday: Competitive Meeting
Please talk to us if you have any concerns, but we strongly suggest you attend this meeting to get in some last practice and assistance from veteran competitive members before we set foot in Jersey.
Thursday will also be a critical day to practice for LDE, so make sure to stick around if you are involved in the Thriller routine.
The schedule will look something like this:
- Open Practice for Princeton 1hr
- LDE "Thriller" Practice 1hr
We hope to see all our competitive members there! And by hope we mean we will. At least 90%.
The Competitive Collective
Hey my competitive cuties! You should definitely know this by now, but if the long weekend left you clueless, allow us to jog your memory: Princeton is this Saturday, October 21st. Even if you forget, we'll be here a thousand times during Mock Comp week to be like, "Yeah, Princeton is in a couple days. Be there."
In order to compete at Princeton, we ask that you deliver your registration money (either $40 or $45) to Amanda at either Mock Comps Monday or Wednesday.
Imma repeat that again, because it's so important, but in bullet form:
- BRING
- REGISTRATION
- MONEY
- TO
- MOCK
- COMP
If you do not bring in this money, you cannot compete at Princeton. Thems the rules.
Lastly, if you need assistance with hair for Princeton, please attend our Hair Party Friday at 5:30pm at Nassau Lounge. Our lovely comp ladies have been trained in creating the most fashionable rock-hard hairstyles for our newbies. Seriously, they don't move.
The Social Butterfly
Latin Dance Explosion, our on-campus semester event, will be happening October 27th at 7pm in HofUSA! This is the perfect opportunity to perform, as well as dance socially with brand new people, so like, seize the heck out of that. Hmm... right before Halloween too. It's almost too coincidental... I wonder if the E-Board noticed or anything...
Oh, and bring yo' friends and yo' boo-tangs. And if you don't got a boo-tang, here's the perfect time to meet some tall, illustrious stranger who miraculously knows how to count music and give proper tension. That'd be nice...
But like, we aren't the Flirting Club or anything.
As well, Hofstra Ballroom Dance will be volunteering for Rhythm Break Cares on November 17th for their Friday Night Fever event in Manhattan!
We're very excited to work with Rhythm Break Cares - an organization bringing dance and music therapy to Alzheimer's and dementia patients! This is the very first time we have volunteered for this organization, so we're so excited to see what we have in store!
Another amazing thing about this opportunity is that other ballroom teams will be in attendance. Socializing and making friends outside of Hofstra is always fun. Plus, you could always find a competition partner. Suh-weeet.
Both events will be explained soon by the E-Board at meetings, so don't fret if you have silly newbie questions, silly newbies.
