Yegua Update
October - 2023
It's an Exciting Time to be a Yegua!
Hey Yeguas!
We just finished up our first full month of school, and it has been a great start to our school year! It is hard to believe that we have already completed our 1st six-week grading period. Our new on-campus HealthPoint clinic has gotten off to an amazing start and has truly brought affordable healthcare options right to our door steps. The feedback we have received so far from parents has been incredible. Our students just wrapped up an awesome week of fair activities showing all kinds of livestock and Ag Mech Projects. This year's sale set many records, which of course goes back to support our students. A huge thanks to all of our local supporters!
This year Somerville ISD was chosen to be a part of the first ever Texas Strategic Leadership Cohort partnered with TEA. Somerville is one of only 30 districts in the entire state of Texas to have the honor of being a part of this transformational work! I am excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this process, and I truly believe that the work that we will do through this program will help to set our district up to be THE school of choice in Burleson County for years to come.
The beginning part of this work starts with understanding where we are currently as a district, setting goals for where we want to be, and, most importantly, doing some intense strategic planning for how we want to make that happen. The first step in this process is determining what we want a graduate of Somerville ISD to look like, otherwise known as a Portrait of a Graduate. Below, you will find a survey where we are seeking your input on what a future graduate of Somerville ISD should experience during their time here and what they should be prepared for by the time they walk across the stage as a graduate of Somerville ISD. Using this survey data and other information collected during this process, we will begin to reevaluate our district goals and priorities throughout the district. There will be many opportunities for you to get involved in this work, so please stay tuned! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of educating your student and for the trust you have placed in us!

Somerville ISD Guardian Program
The safety and security of our students and our staff is our highest priority in Somerville ISD. At the regularly scheduled August Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the implementation of a School Guardian Program. Under this program, properly trained and licensed employees will be authorized to possess a firearm on District property and on District vehicles. If necessary, these individuals will use force to protect our students and staff. Like other specific details of our security program, the identities of our Guardians are confidential. Before being authorized to possess firearms, these individuals are selected and evaluated by the administration for their willingness and fitness to perform these security duties. Our School Guardian Program will supplement the protection the District receives from our School Resource Officer, who will also remain part of our security program. If you have any questions about the Somerville ISD School Guardian Program, please contact Eric Holton.

Families enjoying tacos, agua fresca, and loteria!
Our first annual Hispanic Heritage Night was a huge success! It was a fun night with a taco bar, Agua Fresca, Pan Dulce (sweet bread), Loteria (bingo w/prizes), children's games, and more! Throughout the night over 150 people joined us in celebrating Hispanic culture and were provided with some great community resources! Thank you to TCHATT and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for distributing some great resources to all who attended. Finally, a huge thanks to Ms. McConagil and her culinary students for preparing the food, and to Mr. Toliver and his incredible staff for making our Hispanic Heritage Night so special for our community!
