Digital Citizenship Week 2023 ~ In Progress
Did you know that last year, over 80% of ACPS families shared that they have ongoing conversations with their children about internet safety and online behavior, both important pillars of being a good digital citizen? As a Common Sense Media certified district, ACPS prioritizes digital citizenship as a major focus at our schools. As a part of Digital Citizenship Week (October 16th-20th), we hope you’ll join in the conversation as a family! Please explore some of these resources below:
“What is Digital Citizenship?” Video: English Spanish
ACPS Family Field Guide for Digital Citizenship: English Spanish
#ScreenSmarts: Using scholarly research, ACPS explains how screen time affects physical health, cognition, and behavior.
Be on the lookout for information regarding future community events. It will be an opportunity for you to be a part of the conversation and hear more about healthy technology practices.
We appreciate your ongoing support at home with affirming digital citizenship as an important skill for our children!
Calling All Creative Tigers!
Calling all artists! We are holding a contest for our Yearbook Cover! Submissions must include: Scottsville Elementary, “Many Tigers One Roar,” and 2023-2024. We will be looking for covers that represent our positive energy this year. Deadline to submit is October 23 so we can vote by October 26.
NEXT WEEK!
Teachers are excited to share your child's progress with you at our:
Reports Coming Soon
Report Cards for K-5 will be rated on grade level standards. In the past, students were rated 1, 2 or 3 on their instructional level -- but this change will give families a better idea of how their child is doing on grade level standards. This first quarter it is expected for them to not-yet-be on grade level standards, so 1s and 2s are expected. It will be clear to families what is needed to get them to grade level expectations.
VALLS (PK-3) - At conferences, your child’s teacher will share information about a new assessment called the Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System or VALLS.
This is Albemarle County’s first year using this new assessment tool and we are one of 17 divisions in the state of Virginia who is piloting it. Since this is new, we are all learning how to use the information from the screener to guide literacy instruction.
When you meet with your child’s teacher at conferences, they will go over the student summary, bands of risk (high, moderate, low), what band of risk your child fell in, and how we are currently working to support the areas of growth that are being identified. Teachers will also share about their daily literacy instruction and interventions. If your child falls in the high risk band they will receive additional support.
Click here if you’d like to read some additional details about VALLS in advance of your conference .
