Green Team Weekly Update
Week of 5/11-5/15
Breaking News
However, we all know the value of summer engagement, and we all want kids to do some reading over the summer, so please consider encouraging your child to read one of the formerly required titles from the list in the attached PDF or any other books for that matter. Students who do not currently have a public library card may register for one to checkout e-books by completing this online library card registration form: https://webpac.slcl.org/selfreg
Students may also use this link https://www.audiobooksync.com/ to register for free audiobooks throughout the next 11 weeks using the Sora app, which is the student reading app from Overdrive.
Classroom Happenings
ELA- Mrs. Forderhase
Please encourage your child to check his/her email. Students should have received an overdue notice from Hixson’s library if they have any library books checked out to them. These books should be returned to the box by the front office if/when they come to clean out their lockers.
This week in ELA, students finished reading the novel Dear Martin by Nic Stone. The week’s lessons focused on group-related issues and common literary themes. Students wrote about their reading in their online thinkbooks. Next week, students will write a reflection using the content of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the novel. As always, thank you for your support during this difficult time. Stay well!
Science- Mrs. Kenney
Social Studies- Mr. Ward
This week in Social Studies students continued their study o the Civil Rights Movement. Students watched a series of clips from two PBS specials: Finding Your Roots and African American Lives II. These clips explored the ancestry and experiences of several guests such as Samuel L. Jackson, Condoleeza Rice, Queen Latifah, Morgan Freeman, and others. Students were able to discover how Jim Crow laws impacted the lives of these individuals. Our last assignment next week, will have students exploring the music of the Civil Rights era. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. I hope you are all doing well and thank you for your support.
