Fourth Grade Travels Back in Time to the Pony Express!
Written by: Mrs. Jacobsen, Mrs. Linck, Mrs. Meyer, and Mrs. Blanton
In fourth grade, the students have been learning about the Westward Expansion. They were taken back to the time of the covered wagons and pioneer days to experience life when it was just starting. From learning about the Original 13 Colonies to the Louisiana Purchase, the students were introduced to expanding westward. With the westward expansion, information had to be sent through letters and newspapers to the west. Without the technology and transportation that we have today, the Pony Express was created. Students got to experience where the horses and riders began their journey by visiting the Pony Express Museum in Saint Joseph, Missouri. This museum was the starting point of the Pony Express that began on April 3, 1860, and even had an original post from the stable that stood back 163 years ago. The students were able to see artifacts from the Pony Express including one of the few surviving letters that were preserved, the foundation of the original stable, and models of the horses that were used to sell saddles. Upon returning, we asked the students to write about what they learned and how it related to what was being taught at school.
“Today on our field trip, we went to the Pony Express. I learned back in the day that they had to sleep on beds with not really a mattress but it’s like weaved together and then there’s a pillow and blanket. To mail the mail, it was a fee of $5, and the paper was called onion paper.”- Oakley Rhodd
“At the Pony Express Museum, I learned that you had to change the mochila on a horse.” - Lexi Tawzer
“What I liked best about the Pony Express Museum was seeing the house in the museum. It was so cool. You can go inside the house and you will see a table, fire pit, and bed.” - Ryker Siebenmorgen
“Today the folks of 4th grade had just gone to the Pony Express Museum. I just found out about the three men who finished it in ninety days. They were William Russell, Alexander Majors, and William Waddell.”- Robbie Moore
Creating meaningful learning experiences for the students is always a goal at Hiawatha Elementary School. We believe that in fourth grade, that was accomplished by attending the Pony Express Museum and seeing history come to life. We will continue to learn about the Westward Expansion and make even more connections in the upcoming weeks.
