First Day of School News you can Use!!
Ensure your child is getting enough sleep, eating regular meals, and healthy snacks, and has daily exercise. When your child’s mind and body are nourished, tackling school worries is easier.
REST: Children need plenty of sleep under normal circumstances (nine hours per night is recommended), but especially during stressful times. Try reducing television time before bed and have them avoid caffeinated drinks late in the day. Quieter activities, such as reading, will help them wind down.
RESTART YOUR SCHOOL ROUTINE: A week or two before school starts, families should try and get back into the school routine. This may mean having children go to bed at a regular time and waking up early as they would do for school. Organizing backpacks, binders, lunchboxes, and even cafeteria money will also help with the transition into the school routine and will help make the first morning go smoothly.
SPEND QUALITY TIME TOGETHER: Even if it's just a few minutes a day, help your child take their mind off worries by having fun, relaxing, and laughing with loved ones.
PROVIDE EMPATHY: Listen to your child’s concerns. What are they worried about? Why do they expect that to happen? Let your child share their fears and talk about what’s on their mind.
BE INVOLVED IN YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL: When you talk to your child’s teachers, make sure you understand what is needed for a successful start to the school year. This is also an opportunity to be on the same page should a problem arise and know how to best communicate with teachers as you need to.
Mental Health Checklist
MENTAL HEALTH CHECKLIST
Communication is the key to a healthy relationship, but it is also the key component to expression. We all have bad days; I encourage you to develop a mental health checklist, so that you can stay in tune with yourself and have a head start on those emotions that make you not pleasant to be around. Make a daily schedule, make your classroom feel safe, show empathy, and know what resources are available within your school system. You will be amazed at how the small things can make a difference in your mental health.
