The official monthly newsletter of Horning Middle School
Principal's Message
As the leaves change we are hard at work getting into our routines here at Horning Middle School. Our clubs and activities are up and running, some such as cross country are literally doing just that and we have pictures below to prove it! Continue to check the links below to see about athletic and club opportunities in the coming months. I am encouraged by all the enthusiasm in our classrooms from our students and staff. We also had our first feather turn in as a part of our monthly PBIS incentive. Feathers are earned by students when staff catch a student making good choices. We have been spending a lot of time teaching and reteaching expectations in all our learning environments.
Let's make it a great October!

Ariele Vaccaro-8th Grade Literacy
After three years at Park View MS in Mukwonago, I'm proud to now call myself part of the Horning team. As of this month, I'm a 32-year-old board game nerd with a penchant for the kinds of hobbies your grandmother enjoys. I live with my boyfriend (an English teacher at North), along with our Chiweenie, Russ, and our two cats, Zuki and Bella, in Milwaukee. We lost a few family members this summer - our rats Lisa and Myra and our fluffy, always-friendly black cat, Cheeze-It. May they rest in peace. I am the eldest of eight kids from an Italian family, including six girls and two boys. My youngest brother is a senior in high school in Muskego. I served with AmeriCorps at a literacy nonprofit after a couple of years in journalism. I am fascinated by the human brain and spend my free time listening to audiobooks about psychology and mental health while crocheting. I believe that all humans are worthy of love simply for being humans. Self-awareness, accountability, and integrity are my most prized values. Please stop by room 273 and say hi!
Jake Senger-FLIGHT

I have 3 daughters who also go to school in Waukesha. I have 1 sister who lives in Pennsylvania. I graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Geography/education. I will receive my Masters in special education/elementary education in December from Carroll University.
Josh Kraner-Phy Ed
Hello, my name is Josh Kraner. I am going into my 19th year of teaching Physical Education.I earned my bachelor degree at UW-Whitewater and Masters of Education at Carroll University. I previously taught at Milwaukee School of Languages and I'm super excited to be joining the Horning Community!
I live in Waukesha with my wife and our 2 children, Bryce and Kaiya. We also share our home with three labrador retrievers. I am the Waukesha West Softball head coach and I also enjoy coaching my son's baseball team with the Waukesha Blazers. In my free time, I enjoy attending other sports games, hunting, and working around our yard! I am looking forward to a great first year at Horning! Go Hawks!
Anna Averkamp-Student Teacher-AVID
Hi, my name is Anna Averkamp, and I am Shannon Kay’s student teacher. I am in my final semester of graduate school pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching at Carroll University. I am also the Graduate Assistant for Carroll’s women’s volleyball program. I graduated from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor of Science in Design while playing colligate volleyball. During my free time, I enjoy being outdoors with my family, hiking, or water skiing. I am really looking forward to this quarter at Horning and having the opportunity to learn so much.
Continuing Information
PBIS
It will be implemented at all three middle schools in Waukesha this year. PBIS works to explicitly teach behavioral expectations to students in a proactive manner and also to celebrate students who are making good choices. Lessons will be done through Advisory this year and within the classroom when needed.
Bell Schedule for the 2023-24 School Year
All students will begin the day with Advisory and receive instruction in all four core academic areas each day of the week
Each class with be 44 minutes in length with the exception of blocked ELA and Math which will be double that time
Attendance and Electronics Reminders
Attendance:
Attendance is extremely important.
Our school wide expectation is that every student is arriving to their scheduled class on time prior to the start of class bell. This will ensure that active learning time is maximized and students are receiving the best learning environment possible.
Students have 3 minutes to transition from one class to the next. This time should be used to prepare for their upcoming class.
Students are able to access their lockers before school, before lunch, after lunch, and at the end of the school day. Students should be utilizing these opportunities to prepare themselves for their early/late classes.
Please do your best to make sure that your technology (iPad) is charged and ready to go at the start of the day. This will ensure classroom time is maximized for learning.
Cell Phone:
The School District of Waukesha has in place a cell phone policy that requires cell phones to be placed in their locker upon entering the school building. The phone should be turned off and left in their locker until they leave at the end of the school day.
Thank you all for helping support us in a successful school year. Working together we can accomplish great things.
