Calendar Reminder:
February 21: Presidents Day Holiday (no school)
Credit Recovery for Semester 1: notifications are being sent out this week, and students will have the opportunity to complete assignments specified by teachers between now and April 8th to show mastery for the first semester.
Please remind your students to reach out to teachers with questions, make good use of study hall, utilize Bright Knights Peer Tutoring and Math Lab, and, ahem, put away devices in class, especially during instructional times!
Black History Month:
The Black Student Union (BSU) has shared several opportunities for students and families to engage in learning and empowering people of color. Consider checking out the HBCU panel, open mic event, spirit night at Panera (Feb 25), and participating in BSU's BHM spirit week next week (days are listed below; event dates and locations are in the "save the date" section).
Shout outs to Mr. Layne's class for designing the slides on our homepage (go check them out here!) and to BSU students who have been reading an inspirational quote each morning this month. Thank you for your leadership in celebrating BHM.
Parking:
Students should be parking in designated student parking. Students who park in spaces other than student designated areas will receive consequences beginning Monday, February 14.
Students still needing to purchase parking permits for the spring semester are able to do that now. Visit the online payment portal here; be sure to select the 2nd semester option from the drop down menu. If the student is purchasing a parking permit for the first time, the student needs to complete the online payment and also visit Ms. Berry in the main office for the parking tag. Please contact Ms. Berry with questions (karen.berry@lcps.org).
Behind The Wheel
Students that are ready to start the exciting process of signing up for Behind the Wheel, are in need of a new DEC-8 card, or need access to driving information: please visit the PE/Health school website. From there, you can also access the Schoology course (code: PZPJ-B4BB-N99JQ). This course is where you can access the Behind the Wheel registration forms and request a DEC-8 card.
The DEC-8 card pick up and submission of the paperwork for Behind the Wheel can be done with Ms. Samantha Girardi, School Counseling Secretary.
Passes
As a reminder, students must have passes for all visits outside of their assigned location. For example, if a student wants to see a teacher during lunch, arrangements must be made between the teacher and student in advance, and the teacher will create the appointment pass. Students will no longer be allowed to leave a class or cafeteria without a created pass.
Masks
As a reminder, if you're attending events inside of JCHS or any LCPS facility, you must wear a mask; masks are not provided. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Counseling
Mindfulness Moment
Teens and adults can practice these exercises to lessen their stress and clear their heads. It’s easy and only takes a few minutes.
Take time to tense one muscle (for example, your calf muscle) and then release it. Continue with other muscle groups tensing and releasing, and feeling the tightness in your body slowly fade away.
Eat a snack by practicing mindful eating. Take time to taste your food, and think about whether it is sweet, salty, spicy, or bland. Identify the texture of the food, and enjoy each bite!
Practice the 5,4,3,2,1 activity. Look around and identify 5 things you see (look for something that is not easily seen - cracks on the wall, a stain in the carpet, a smudge on a window). Then think about four things you can feel (it could be the chair cushion beneath you, the wooden desk that your elbows are resting on, the cold floor tiles that your feet are touching). Three things that you can hear - (a bird chirping outside, a song playing on your phone, a car driving by). Two things you can smell (dinner cooking in the oven, perfume lingering in the hallway). Finally one thing you can taste (peppermint gum in your mouth).
Taking a walk and observing the world around you. Look at the blades of grass, the trees and their branches, a squirrel rustling in the leaves, and the sounds that you hear.
Mindfulness is about being present in the moment. Take time for yourself and try to let go of the stress.

Full-length SAT Practice
For just $20, students can take a full-length practice SAT exam with Huntington Learning Center on Saturday, February 26, at 9 a.m. in the JCHS cafeteria. Students from any school can register for the test. Proceeds go to the Champe PTSA, which supports our students and teachers. Please click here to register for this event.
Huntington Learning Center will provide you with a comprehensive score report and teach you how to analyze your results. Since the scores are not reported and will only be seen by you, this is a risk-free opportunity. Don't miss out!
