STARS Program
At Spotswood High School, our STARS program focuses on character development and school involvement as a way to combat bullying. STARS stands for Students Taking a Responsible Stand. We want all of our students to feel as though they can stand up for themselves and for their peers. We are also working to improve the overall school atmosphere by encouraging each student to make a positive contribution.
As a part of the STARS program, we select a group of juniors and seniors each year to serve as STARS Ambassadors. During the school year, these students represent Spotswood High School through community service, demonstrating the character and involvement we wish for all students, and helping new students find their way around by mentoring a group of selected freshmen.
Several freshmen who have been paired with Ambassador mentors are not only new to the school but also to the English language. In speaking to one of these students about his Ambassador, he said, “She helps me a lot.” He spoke of how she encouraged him to try out for the swimming team, invites him to school activities like the Powder Puff game in the fall, and communicates on a regular basis through text messages and during the school day allowing him to practice speaking in English.
A senior Ambassador spoke of the program, saying: “As Ambassadors, we are given the opportunity to influence other students and change their high school experience. But the program is what we make it. We get out what we put in.”
