The Newsletter for Broad Run HS November, 2023
Principal's Message
The second quarter has begun, and we are beginning winter sports. I want to congratulate all our fall athletes on a great season, and special kudos to those teams and individuals who went on to regional and state play. We also have had our Academic Honor Roll recognition and our National Honor Society induction. Congratulations to all the students on your academic and philanthropic success.
Our Co/Extra curricular clubs have been active and meeting during seminar time. Several have been promoting positive relationships and entrepreneurship among our students. Later in November, we will conduct vision and hearing screening for certain students. We will also begin SOL testing for transfer and make ups in December.
As the school year continues, I want to encourage students and parents to think about their classes this year, academic plan, and how we will begin selecting courses for next year in February. It is important to think about balance, taking on challenges, and keeping in mind your areas of interest.
As we approach the holiday season, I want to wish all our students and their families safe and happy holidays.

Adapted Field Day Continues its Legacy
Adapted PE Field Day was developed more than 15 years ago, when John Costello had a dream to create an inclusive field day for the students who received Adapted PE services. He wanted there to be a day where the students could participate in fun, lifelong activities that were created with their abilities in mind and accessible to ALL students. He wanted his BRHS high school PE students to work with the Adapted PE classes so they could get the opportunity to socialize with peers from within BRHS and create an inclusive school and community. Alongside the adapted physical education teacher assigned to BRHS, John Costello’s dream created what is now known as the Adapted PE Field Day, and it is a huge success. As Adapted PE grew in LCPS, so did field day. By the end of the 2015-2016 school year, each cluster (total of 6) held an Adapted PE Field Day for all the feeder schools!
Broad Run Literary Magazine Wins Trophy Class
At the 2023 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Media Championship, Broad Run's literary magazine Unbound earned a Trophy Class ranking for their 2022-23 publication, Worlds Beyond Windows. Trophy Class is the highest ranking bestowed by VHSL. Only eight other schools in the state received this award.
The 22-23 Unbound Staff, advised by Michele Evans, comprised of six editors: Zoe Anderson, Andra Ireland, Promina Islam, Lauren Lemieux, Rose Smith, and Sara Younce, and twenty-seven club members from Spartans, Ink, and students from Creative Writing I and II classes. Together they reviewed over 200 art and writing submissions to create the 40-page award-winning literary magazine. To view a digital copy of the issue, click on this link. Submissions for the 2023-24 issue are now open. For more information, visit the Unbound website by clicking on this link.
