Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
Our theme again this year is Joyful Engagement in Learning and Community and we are really living into it! This week our wonderful PTA sponsored a BMX Assembly from Stuntmasters. The assembly was super fun-a few of us got bunny-hopped over-and the message was right in line with our September character trait of growth mindset. Thank you PTA!
This month, all grade levels are learning about Growth Mindset & Goal Setting. Second Step, our Social Emotional Learning Curriculum, describes growth mindset as, “the belief that you can improve with practice and effort.” In kidspeak, we describe this as, “No matter where you start, you can get better with practice.” Next week, our counselor, Mrs. Fitts, will share language we use to teach and practice growth mindset with students.
Early in the year, we continue to focus on the routines and relationships that will strengthen our community and develop the sense of belonging we want each student to experience. We appreciate your partnership and help getting your student to school each day.
Sincerely,
Kelly Rogers

Art Literacy Volunteer Meeting
We would like to invite you to volunteer with the Art Literacy program. There will be three artists presented this year. If you plan to volunteer, we ask that you attend this informational meeting where you will learn all you need to know to lead your class through the presentation of each artist. Sharing art with kids is a really fun experience. The classroom teacher will be with you at all times to help. No art skills or art background required. Be sure to sign up directly with your classroom teacher, and also with the office to have your background check completed. We look forward to seeing you!

Arrival and Dismissal
During the arrival and dismissal process, our main goal is to keep our students safe. Efficiency is something we always want to improve, but ensuring every one of our students safely gets to school and back home to you is the most important objective.
ARRIVAL
During arrival, all walking students must use designated crosswalks. Here are a few more details.
- Car Drop-off: A drop-off car line will run through our West parking lot. Please remain in your vehicle and have your child ready to exit. New this year—Please pull as far forward as possible (all the way to the gazebo) to drop your child off. This allows students to exit your vehicle directly onto the sidewalk and not walk across the parking lot. It will also allow more parents to drop their children off simultaneously, improving our efficiency and saving you/them time.
- Buses: Buses will drop off in front of the school. Students will exit the buses around 7:45 at the first bell.
- Entering the building
- K-1st grade students enter our front main entrance doors.
- 2nd-3rd grade students enter the front doors at the SE corner of the building.
- 4th-6th grade students enter the front doors at the SW corner of the building.
- Parents will be permitted to walk students to class to begin the school year. Parents need to exit the building by 8:00 am.
- Staff will greet students and do a quick visual screen at each entrance.
DISMISSAL
- Car Pick-up: A car pick-up line will run through our West parking lot. Students line up in our gym with staff and then are released to the gazebo area once their car is seen.
- Bussers: Bus students will be released to get on the bus in front of the school.
- Parent Walk-up: Parents and caregivers can walk to the back of our building to pick up their students. New this year—Students will form a line behind their teacher under the covered area of the playground. The parent or caregiver must check-in with the student’s teacher to be released.
- Walkers: Parents who give students permission to walk home, must use designated crosswalks. We dismiss walkers out to 5th Street so they can use our crossing guard at 5th and Douglas, and 5th and Cedar.*
*Picking up your student on Cedar St. is strongly discouraged. Our dismissal processes are safe and efficient, and typically take 5-10 minutes from beginning to end. Thank you for using one of our designated dismissal processes.
Attendance
I want to take a moment to share a goal we have as a school community: Attendance. Our goal is to have 95% of all of our students present every day. Further, we want 100% of our students to attend 95% of their school days. Being at school is the first step in a student engaging in their learning.
Our goal is to partner with you to do everything we can to get your students to school. Please let us know if your student will be absent and please let us know if there is anything we can do to support your student. Our teachers and staff will contact you when your child is gone to make sure they know we miss them and want them at school.
Meals at School
Would you like to make a difference in your child’s school? Well, here’s how!
Encourage them to try out the School Breakfast Program!
Mornings can be hectic and making sure your kids eat a healthy breakfast can be difficult in the thick of the A.M. rush. Fortunately, a nutritious, balanced meal is offered in school at the start of each day! It’s fun, easy, and provides your children with the fuel they need to energize their day and perform their very best. So don’t let them run on empty… give school breakfast a try today!
******************************************
Your children may qualify for free or for reduced-price meals! If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online.
- If you have qualified in the past, you need to re-qualify as soon as possible. There is not a 'grace' period this year.
For additional information click here and to fill out an application click here. Oregon is working hard to assist families by expanding the income guidelines to determine eligibility. Many families who don't think they will qualify, do! Check it out!
After-school Childcare Program
For the 2023-2024 school year, we will continue to offer an after-school child care program at two district schools: Knight Elementary and Trost Elementary. Students from Eccles and Ninety-One school will attend the program at Knight Elementary. Students from Carus and Lee Elementary will have potential busing support to attend the program at Trost Elementary. Families will need to pick up their students at either Trost or Knight Elementary.
We will offer care from 2:30-4:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Wednesdays) at the rate of $12 per day. Families can continue to choose full-time or part-time (M, W, F or T, TH) care.
Please complete this Google Form to register, as well as provide a $50 cash or check deposit to the Canby School District office, 1130 S Ivy St. Canby, OR 97013.
