Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month
We are having a blast celebrating and learning about Hispanic Heritage Month! Students in Mrs. Klein's 6th grade social studies class, with Mrs. Gorka, Mr. Wright, and Ms. Otero Reyes, learned about the culture of Brazil and Puerto Rico this past week. So much fun!
Happy New Year to our Fredonia families who celebrate Rosh Hashanah!
Drone Program Continues This Year
What does it mean to be innovative?
Students in Greg Haase's Introduction to Drones: Basic Quadcopter Skills class are exploring the use of drones. They are learning all rules and regulations that a regular aircraft pilot would need to know about flying safely. Students are learning how airports operate, where you can legally fly without authorization, how weather affects the drones' flight, and various careers that already use drones. They are also learning how to operate various types of drones.
When students complete the course, they will be eligible to take the 14 CFR Part 107 Airman Knowledge Test given by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This class prepares them to take the test. Should they pass the test, they will be issued a FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. This certificate is very much like a driver's license. It allows the pilot to fly drones for commercial purposes, which gives these students an advantage moving forward with potential career options. The test takes place at an FAA testing facility in Erie, PA.
Mr. Haase, who also went through hands-on training prior to teaching this course, says:
"I'm very excited about this course and nervous because I've never taught anything like this before. The cool part is that I get to learn with them."
Thank you Mr. Haase for leading the charge to be innovative at FCSD!
In the Doghouse
Students in Mrs. Krenzer's Technology class have been testing out the doghouses they constructed to see if they can stay under 90 degrees for 30 minutes. We love this hands-on learning! No animals (real or stuffed) were harmed during this process.
Building the Colony
Students in Turning Points are finishing up their first project, building the Jamestown Colony. Students were given a list of buildings to construct and geographical features to create. The object of this project was to help students visualize the early colony and the struggles/later success it had. Kudos to Mr. Hitchcock for engaging his students in this project!
NYC Drama Trip
48 FHS Drama Club students visited New York City this week for the first Drama Club trip since 2018. Students and chaperones saw the Broadway musicals "Hadestown" and "Wicked." Other activites included tours of the Empire State Building and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, a Statue of Liberty Harbor Cruise, a group dinner at John's Pizza on 44th Street, and time spent in Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Central Park. Chaperones were FCS teachers Ben Wendell, Kristin Tomaszewski, Megan Czekanski, Kevin Way, April Hartung and Ryan Shanahan.
Thanks to Ryan Davis for another fantastic video of the trip!
Tye Dye Fun for Spirit Week
