November 6 - November 10, 2023
Principal's Message...
Hi Sierra Families,
I want to take a moment to explain absences, both excused and unexcused as well as our Independent Study program options.
Under California Education Code, excused absences are those that are for:
Illness
Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer
Having medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic services
Attending a funeral service of a family member
*Additional less common reasons may be found here: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=48205.&lawCode=EDC
All other absences are unexcused, and we always appreciate communication to the office when your child is absent.
Independent Study: For any planned absence of 3-14 school days, an Independent Study contract is a great option, allowing your child's teacher to put together work and your child to get credit for school attendance and work completion during the absence. We do ask for a two-week notification, and that you contact both your child's teacher and the office to set this up.
If any questions arise regarding attendance, please always feel free to reach out and we are happy to help.
Have a great weekend,
Reagan Phillips

Did you know...that different parenting styles affect children in different ways?
There are 4 main parenting styles; Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive and Uninvolved. Here are the different styles and some pros and cons of each:
Authoritarian
Parents believe kids should follow the rules without exception and tend to be more strict expecting obedience without explanation
Children can be at higher risk for developing low self-esteem if their opinions aren’t valued or feel they can’t live up to standards, may become aggressive or develop anger
Authoritative
Parents put a lot of effort into into creating a positive relationship with their child, explain the reason behind rules, set limits, enforce rules and give consequences but also take the child’s feelings into consideration
Children tend to be happy and successful and are most likely to become responsible adults, make sound decisions and evaluate safety risks on their own
Permissive
Parents set rules but rarely enforce them, consequences are not often given. Believe child will learn best with little interference and don’t want to get into a battle with their children and may let behaviors slide often
Children are more likely to struggle academically, may exhibit more behavior problems as they don’t appreciate authority or rules. Sometimes these children develop low self-esteem, report sadness and are a higher risk for health problems like unhealthy sleep habits or dental habits due to absence of brushing teeth for example
Uninvolved
Parents often have little knowledge of what their children are doing, don’t ask about their homework or school, rarely know who their child’s current friends are or what they do online. Tend to have few household rules. These can occur unintentionally due to our busy schedules, etc.
Children in this category may struggle with self-esteem, seek out adult connections, perform poorly in school or exhibit behavior problems
There isNO such thing as the perfect parent and we all fall into one or more of these categories depending on what is occurring in our lives at the time. So don’t beat yourself up. You are doing the best you can and parenting is a full-time job. This article is such a good reminder though, of the different ways our parenting styles CAN affect our littles. How can your parenting style improve? I know how mine can and I am ready to try out some new strategies at home. Good luck! Thanks for being awesome!
