News from Mrs. Thode
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year. I am so excited to get started in my fourth year as your principal.
Back to School Night
Tuesday, August 22 from 5-7pm is Back to School night for all students at Riverside. This will be for all students that will be attending Riverside this fall. We look forward to seeing you!
First Day of School:
Wednesday, August 23 will be the first day of school for students in grades Kindergarten through fifth. Students that need to eat breakfast may arrive at 8:00 am. All other students should not arrive until 8:25, as we do not have adults to supervise children that arrive early. All students should enter through the gates to the playground.
Preschool students will begin on Wednesday, August 30. Students should arrive at 8:30 and will enter through the front entryway on Nash Street. Parents will meet preschool staff at the doors at that time.
Dismissal:
Students will be dismissed using two different dismissal areas. Dismissal times are:
3:15 for Preschool using the front doors-Parents will meet staff.
3:30 Kindergarten, 1st and second grade students through the front doors.
3:30 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students through the playground gates.
Please communicate with your children how they will be getting home each day. If your plans change, please call the office by 3:00 so that we can be sure to let them know in an appropriate amount of time.
Please remember that every Monday there is an early dismissal for teacher professional development. Dismissal times will be 2:15 and 2:30.

Handbook Includes Updated Protocol Information
Have you reviewed the 2023-2024 SCCSD Parent/Guardian – Student Handbook? The handbook includes important updates to the district protocols for cell phones and vaping along with other information to help students reach their fullest potential at school. Families are encouraged to review the handbook with their students to make sure they are aware of what is expected of them as a student in the Sioux City Community School District.

Have a Safety Concern?
Safe + Sound Iowa offers students and families a convenient way to anonymously report safety concerns related to our school. Trained dispatchers will share the information with appropriate school administrators and/or law enforcement so help can be given to those in crisis or at risk.
School Safety
The safety of our students and staff is paramount. The District uses Standard Response Protocol or common terms to communicate our action and response to an emergency situation. The terms Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter are used so students, staff, and first responders understand the situation and how best to respond.
We encourage families to become familiar with these terms to better understand our school’s response and what to expect in a crisis situation. For more information on safety preparedness within the District, visit siouxcityschools.org.
