CVSD Update
August 18, 2022

Superintendent's Message, May 2023
Hello CVSD Families and Caregivers!
As we approach Memorial Day weekend and the final three weeks of the school year, I reflect on the journey we've embarked upon together. It has most definitely been a year filled with resilience, growth, and the joyful spirit that defines our community.
The (currently forecasted as a beautiful) three-day weekend, is a preface to the summer months, brimming with possibilities and new adventures. I hope that you can make the time to get outside and enjoy all that Vermont has to offer. As we grow closer to the end-of-the-year celebrations, 8th-grade promotions, and high school graduation, the excitement brought on by the potential of summer keeps us going to the end of the year.
Just a few reminders before the newsletter below. First, next Saturday, CVSD will host its 3rd annual district-wide Pride Rally. There will have booths, speakers, and community building. Please come and join us if you have the time. The event will occur at the Hinesburg Community School campus from 10-1. Second, CVSD will continue its outreach to our community during the Shelburne and Isham Farmer’s Markets this summer and fall. We will have a booth at each location at least once a month. Once those dates are solidified, we will put them on the website.
CVSD extends its heartfelt appreciation to all the parents, caregivers, and community members who have supported our students' educational journey throughout the year. Your dedication and involvement have made a significant impact on their growth and success.
Thank you for being an integral part of our educational community. Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead!

Our Definitions
Identity is developing a sense of one’s self with respect for the uniqueness of others.
Connection exists when all individuals see themselves in others and in their environment. It is the feeling that our individual and collective story is known. We learn and appreciate new perspectives. Connection is committing to the time and effort to build shared experiences and understandings.
All learners find direction by discovering purpose and exploring passions or interests. We honor where learners are and support their growth, helping them navigate pathways and empowering them to reach their fullest potential.
Proficiency: All students and staff members demonstrate progress and develop capacity toward CVSD student and educator learning targets.

2023-2024 School Year Calendar
The 2023-2024 school year calendars are now available on the district's website.
A Message from Connecting Youth
Two things can be true about summer break for youth:
Unstructured and unsupervised time can present opportunities to practice decision-making, time management, self-regulation, responsibility and independence in different ways outside of a school setting.
Unstructured and unsupervised time can also present high-risk environments for youth to start using substances like vaping.
To get ahead of #2, CVSD x Connecting Youth’s offer families and caregivers our vaping prevention toolkit. Let this be your go-to resource for vaping education, conversation starters, community partners and contacts for help.
We know discussing vaping and substance use with youth is challenging. Even uncomfortable at times. Knowledge is power and this toolkit will give you the confidence to break down the challenges, fostering trust and understanding, ultimately making strides towards community prevention.
Academics
VTCAP Statewide Standardized Tests This Spring
We are now within the window of administering the VTCAP and all students grades 3 through 9 at CVSD have some experience with the new Vermont Common Assessment Program (replacing the SBAC). As a reminder, all 3rd through 9th graders will be completing both English Language Arts and Math and 5th, 8th, and 11th graders will be completing the Science portion. Our students and their teachers have been flexible and engaged as we all learn this new assessment process together.
You may be accustomed to receiving a letter and your student's individual results in the mail over the summer. We have been informed by the AOE that results will not be available until August at the earliest, and we wanted to assure that as soon as we are able to send results home with an explanation of how to read those results, we plan to do so.
CVSD Grants
CVSD benefits from a number of federal grants to support our system. A key factor for some of these grants is the desire and need to engage students, families, and community members in decisions about how to best use these funds to support our students. We invite you to send your feedback to Sarah Crum, Director of Learning & Innovation, at scrum@cvsdvt.org or submit feedback through the Academics Let's Talk button on our website.
You can find information about all of our grants on our website, cvsdvt.org, under Curriculum: Grants. We are specifically seeking input regarding our investments for the Title IV federal grant which is intended to improve students' academic achievement by increasing the capacity to 1) Provide all students with access to a well-rounded education; 2) Improve school conditions for student learning; and 3) Improve the use of technology in order to improve the academic achievement and digital literacy of all students.

New Let's Talk Features
We strive to make it easy for any parent/caregiver, community member, staff, or student to contact the district or our schools. Anyone can use Let's Talk to ask questions, request information, and share feedback or compliments.
Here are two new features that we've recently added to Let's Talk.
- Translate: We have just added the ability to submit a Let's Talk form in 12 languages. When you go to our Let's Talk page, you'll see an option to Select a Language. It also works on the pop-out tab.
- Send us a text from a mobile device! Now, contacting us is even easier from a mobile device. The district has a unique number just for Let's Talk texts and each school has one as well. Send us a text with a question, suggestion, or compliment and you'll get a reply that way too!
Use these numbers to reach out via text: (Note: these numbers do not accept phone calls)

Receive Text Messages Sent from the District or Your School
→ → Don't forget to opt-in to receive any text messages that are sent from the district or our schools via our messaging platform, School Messenger. We don't overuse this feature, but it does provide a quick and timely way to get messages to you. Follow the steps on this flyer to opt-in.
