TEEN GAMBLING
With increased independence, teens are often in the position of making decisions about behaviors that may pose risk. Gambling is one such behavior. Conversations with parents/caregivers can prevent behaviors from becoming problematic. Gambling among teens is a growing issue impacting health. Teens who gamble are at higher risk for depression, lower grades, lower self-esteem, increased conflicts with others, and suicide.
Below are some prevention resources to help you to recognize warning signs and to begin conversations. Talking about gambling can be woven into everyday conversations. Keep the doors open by reminding your teen that you care about them and that their health and safety are your priority.

Senator Rausch's Youth Advisory Council Application
- What is the Youth advisory Council?
- The Youth Advisory Council aims to give our students a platform to work with the Senator on the key issues their generation is facing and to encourage future civic engagement and change making through the legislative process. This council was born out of our bi-annual “Students Speak” series, where students in our district engage with the Senator on important issues that require additional support. Last year, students shared with her the mental health struggles their peers faced during the COVID-19 pandemic – isolation, lack of support and structure, hopelessness, and more. From this conversation, the Senator helped champion “Hey Sam,” an anonymous platform through Samaritans, Inc. where teens can text with a trained adult and receive support and advice when they need it. The Senator is eager to continue working with passionate students to propose and craft feasible solutions like “Hey Sam” and enacting change on key adolescent issues. Some important information about the Youth Advisory Council:
- Logistics
- Students will serve two-year terms on the Council.
- The Youth Advisory Council will meet biannually with the Senator, and once every other month with the me
- Students will discuss pressing youth issues of their choosing and work to enact positive change in response to these issues. Some of these issues may include education, gun safety, DEI initiatives, mental health, and more.
- One sophomore and one junior from each town in the district will be selected.
- A student interested in applying should submit the following application form: 2022 Youth Advisory Council application
- Applications are due by Friday November 18th
- What will students get out of this experience?
- Students will have the opportunity to communicate directly with their elected representative and advocate for change where they see inequity and injustice.
- Students will gain insight into the inner workings of government and the process by which progressive ideas become law.
- Students will work with their cohort on 2-3 long-term research and policy proposals, giving them additional and unique teamwork opportunities and research and writing skills.
- Students will gain impressive credentials for their resume and college essays.
- Students will grow their network both with the Senator’s office and the many students throughout the district interested in civic engagement.
Thank you,
Alana
