Week of February 21st
Message from Principal Drew...
There are several changes coming to PCHS this week that you need to be aware of as we come back to school on Tuesday. The Board of Education voted on Tuesday night of this past week to make masks optional for all students and staff in Perquimans County Schools. This means that as students enter the building on Tuesday they have the option to wear a mask or to not wear a mask. We ask that you make the choice that is best for you and your family and that you respect the choice others make with regard to this matter. Students who ride a bus to and from school will still be required to wear a mask in order to ride the bus. This is a federal requirement and is still in effect on all of our buses.
The second change will be the distribution of loaner Chromebooks to students. Starting on Tuesday students will not be able to check out a loaner Chromebook two days in a row unless their school issued Chromebook is out for repair. Students are expected to bring their school issued Chromebook to school fully charged each day. If there is an issue with their Chromebook they should turn it into the front office and complete a work ticket to have it repaired. Parents we need your help with making sure that your student has their Chromebook fully charged and packed for school each day.
The third change that students will see this week will be lunch in the cafeteria for all students each day. Beginning Tuesday all students will eat their lunch in the cafeteria during their assigned lunch time. No students should be eating lunch in their classrooms starting Tuesday.
We had a week full of success and celebrations at PCHS this past week. Tuesday was School Resource Officer Appreciation Day and we are blessed to have Sergeant David Murray serve at the SRO at PCHS. His dedication to the safety and security of all students and staff is evident in all that he does and we are thankful that he is a Pirate! Also on Tuesday we recognized Tamia Mallory and Richard Story as the February Rotary Students of the Month. Congratulations to these two outstanding students. Thursday night our FFA sponsored our Snow Ball Winter Formal which was great time for all who attended. On Friday our Fire Academy and FFA sponsored a very successful fund raiser for PCHS student Ayden Reiver and we thank each of your who supported this effort. Also on Friday night, our Lady's and Men's basketball teams both finished as Conference Tournament Runner-ups at South Creek High School. At the conclusion of the girls game it was announced that Jada Modlin was named the Conference Player of the Year for 2022. Finally, on Saturday our Winterguard debuted their competition program in the gym at PCHS. It was very well done and we wish them the best of luck as they compete at Franklinton High School and Grassfield High School in the coming weeks.
This week will also be an eventful week at PCHS.
Monday is an optional teacher workday. Students will not have school on this day.
Tuesday we host the first round of the basketball playoffs for our girls and boys basketball teams. The girls will play at 6:00 versus Pamlico County and the boys will follow at 7:30 versus Voyager Academy. Good luck to both teams. Also on Tuesday night we will be hosting a parent night event from 5:45 to 8:00. Families that have registered will be able to explore the elective options at PCHS for the coming school year and get a better understanding of the courses that interest them as we continue the registration process for all students in the coming weeks. Each of our elective pathways will be represented and provide insight into the courses they offer and the topics they cover. We are truly excited to share with all those in attendance the great opportunities available at PCHS.
Wednesday our JV baseball team will scrimmage Edenton at 4:00 at historic Hicks Field.
Thursday baseball will be in Currituck to open their season.
Friday night PCHS is pleased to host a free viewing the the movie "Freedom of NC". The movie will begin at 6:00 PM in the PCHS auditorium and is open to the public. We encourage anyone interested to attend this wonderful event.
Saturday our softball team will travel to Plymouth to play Washington County in softball and our baseball team will host their Alumni dinner.
There are also a couple of events coming up that you might want to be aware of at PCHS. On March 1st ALL Juniors will take the ACT at PCHS. We are entering the final week of our ACT bootcamp for students to prepare them for this very important test. Parents encourage your Juniors to do their best this week in preparation for the test and then to take their time and do their best on the test on March 1st.
Also on March 1st our golf team will hold their first practice. Those interested in playing golf should see Coach Roberson for more details.

PCHS will be administering the ASVAB test on March 31. If you are interested in taking this test, you must sign-up in student services as soon as possible. The ASVAB test measures your abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. It is also used by the Armed Services to determine your qualification for enlisting in military service. Taking this test will provide you with lots of resources and information regarding your future career options. See Mrs. Thomas in student services to sign up or to ask questions about the test.
College of the Albemarle is hosting several Application Nights where interested students can receive help with the COA application and the financial aid process. There is a link in the attachment for students to register for the event or you can register on the COA website. Application Nights will be hosted on each COA Campus.
