Community Update
March 3, 2023
Hello North Rockland Families:
Students and staff returned to school this week refreshed and ready.
The second half of the school year is going to be filled with strong, consistent learning and recognition of outstanding academic accomplishments.
With another successful quarter now completed, next week kicks off some astounding Red Raider events. The NRHS Class of 2023 Tops 5% Reveal, Honor Roll breakfasts, District Spelling Bee, Student Faculty Basketball Game, Junior Ball and the Spring Play are all lined up for the second week of March.
Unforgettable celebrations and ceremonies are among some of the most looked forward to occasions of the school year. I must thank our faculty and educators for their hard work, care and extra time spent making each one a tradition of excellence year after year. After all these are big moments that are not only to be remembered, but shared with family, friends and loved ones NR Together.
The next month will also serve as a roadmap for the rest of the 2022-23 school year. Part of jump-starting the second semester is having a good idea of what will happen next. It’s important our students keep a dialogue open with their teachers about the marking period ahead, expectations and pathways to achieve. Make sure to identify any goals, projects or events you want to hit - NOW. Looking ahead, knowing what’s coming and what steps you need to take will allow you to be better able to prepare and triumph.
Though late in the winter, there was still something about the first snow day of the school year. Graced with just enough snowfall, it was the perfect day to play and get cozy. Seeing sleigh tracks and footprints scattered all along the frosty hills of our school buildings is always a sure sign of a well spent snow day in North Rockland.
As the last weeks of Winter roll on, I want to remind everyone that the District will continue to participate in traditional snow/inclement weather days. We have two days left to use for the 2022-23 school year. If the days are not exhausted they will be added on to the Memorial holiday weekend 5/26 and 5/30.
With a busy Spring on the horizon the District will be keeping lines of communication open and highlighting those memorable, milestone worthy moments. I encourage everyone to follow along, share the good news with others and remember when our school district thrives, our community thrives. We are NR!
NRCSD Budget
For the Board of Education and Administration, developing a budget that is both educationally sound and fiscally responsible is an important and comprehensive process. The 2023-24 budget continues our mission of providing a safe, caring, and positive learning environment in which all students can achieve their maximum potential and acquire the skills, attitudes, and abilities needed to succeed in an ever-changing world. It is the District's goal to provide our students with an exemplary experience while controlling taxes for our community. We understand the fiscal challenges that living in Rockland County pose.
As always, our budget fully supports the curriculum, instruction, and professional development that addresses the needs of all learners. Our budget also includes the expanded use of certain “green technologies” and facility improvements to enhance our learning and working environments while achieving real cost savings. School Bus Drivers Rock
Although National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day landed during the Mid-Winter Break, just before the snow started to fall on Monday, the wonderful transportation team at NRCSD surprised our bus drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and support staff at Haverstraw Transit with a well deserved appreciation spread - complete with a photo booth bus, treats, NR gear and many, many giveaways and prizes donated by our wonderful community - at their main office. Let’s give a round of applause to our amazing bus drivers for always ensuring our students start and end their days on the right foot. Full story and more photos linked here.

Catching Up with NR Alumni
NRHS 2022 graduate London Blennan ‘26, a Comparative Women’s Studies major said, “We just want people to know that they have a voice and a choice to change the world.”
“I love Spelman enough to want to see changes,” she added.
The Maroon Tiger (Morehouse's student publication) recently highlighted London for fighting for food access for AUC students with her activist group, The Visionaries. The four students that came together to address food access within the campus community shared that the name of their group was inspired by a class project within the Comparative Women’s Studies Department that challenged them to address a social issue. The petition had over 700 signatures from students, parents, and other stakeholders in the Atlanta University Center community concerned about access to nutritious foods. Let's Take National Read Across America Day into the Weekend! 📖❤️
All across America, students, teachers, librarians and everyone who fosters the power of reading is celebrating the magic of books. The annual event encourages people to dream big, expand the limits of their understanding, and explore perspectives through the eyes of others. Farley Elementary’s PTA helped organize a special guest to come read to three lucky fourth grade classes. That guest, of course, was our very own Superintendent Dr. Kris Felicello. He read a different book to Mrs. Bishop’s, Mrs Taylor’s and Mr. Hirsch & Q’s classes. His animated and enthusiastic reading style had the students on the edge of their seats, pausing at key moments for reflection. Books impart lessons that enrich our lives, stimulate our curiosity, promote contemplation and affirm the myriad possibilities available to every person. Reading transports kids to unique places where they can embrace unfamiliar ideas, develop their own intellect, and spark creativity in their lives. A special thank you to the North Rockland Rotary for donating the book The Invisible String to our third grade students. It was a special treat for our students to have Rotarians read the book to them. Join us and pick up that book you've been meaning to read this weekend! More photos.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
NR Dual Language Program Sign-Up
The NR Dual Language Program provides students the opportunity to learn academic content (math, science, social, and social studies) while also learning to speak, read, and write at a high academic level in Spanish & English. Students enter the dual language program in Kindergarten and commit to remain in the program through sixth grade. Students follow the same curriculum as their peers in English instruction classrooms with the expectation that they meet the same state standards. The program follows a 50/50 model in which students learn their subjects 50% of the time in English and 50% of the time in Spanish. The NR K-6 Dual Language Program is an enrichment program available by lottery to all families of incoming kindergarten students. For more information about the program, please see the attached flier. The 2023-2024 Application Window is February 1-17, 2023. If there are more applicants than slots, we will hold a lottery March 6, 2023, 2-3PM at the Central Administration Building.
Snow Day Policy ❄️
The New York State Department of Education ruled that School District’s are able to utilize the remote-learning technology implemented during the coronavirus pandemic to allow students to continue their studies on days when the snow is too heavy for them to commute to school. Some Districts across the state have adopted a policy that will eliminates traditional snow days all together, opting for a remote learning day During inclement weather. North Rockland will utilize traditional snow days until the three that are built into our calendar are exhausted. Once all of our traditional snow days have been used the District will utilize the remote option when possible.
