It is hard to believe that we are already in mid April. As the trees continue to blossom, the fragrance of flowers fill the air, and birds happily chirp in the morning we appreciate the beauty of our community. The Walker School community was more lively on April 6, when we welcomed some of our students back into the building. As students entered the building, the excitement in their eyes and joy heard in the voices made our community seem more complete. We anxiously look forward to the day, when all of our students are able to return to us.We have been amazed by the students' ability to maintain social distancing and follow safety procedures, while in the building.

Students continue to excel in academics on a daily basis. It dielights us to see students engaged in activities, asking quesitons and applying their knowledge on a daily basis. This outstanding learning could not take place without the extraordinary efforts from our staff. We are excited to watch our students continue to learn and grow for remainder of the year.

This summer, School District 104 will be offering new and improved summer school offerings. While planning is still underway, keep your eyes peeled for information about these exciting opportunities. As more information is finalized, we will share that with families. We are thrilled to offer this program to families, and we know the students will enjoy the offerings as well.

Welcome to Walker Elementary's 2021 Curiosity Fair! Due to Covid restrictions, we were unable to complete our regular Science Fair. This year fourth-grade students participated in a curiosity project and third-grade students completed a recycle project. We are tremendously grateful, to Mr. Karlovics for creating this opportunity for students in the remote setting. Our students did an outstanding job on their projects. Their work amazed us! April 22, 2021 is Earth Day, and the theme this year is Restore Our Earth. This theme encourages us to explore and celebrate green technologies and find ways to restore ecosystems. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 and approximately 20 million people took part in activities. This year, it is anticipated 1 billion people will participate from 192 countries.

We conitue to closely monitor the Covid positivity rate in Summit. Daily, we post the rolling 14 day average on the district's Live Feed on the SD 104 website. Should the rolling 14 day average exceed 8%, we would take an adaptive pause per guidance of IDPH. This would place all students in remote learning until, the average falls below 8%. Should this happen, parents will recieve notification from the district.

Our first all school read aloud, Stella Diaz Never Gives Up was a huge success. Students enjoyed listening to our special guest readers. As we celebrate the end of the year with our 26 Day Countdown, which is full of exciting activites and theme days, we will also begin our second all school read aloud. Our next book is Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girl, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look.

We are excited to announce that Mobile Care Chicago is coming back to SD 104! They will offer no-cost dental care for all SD 104 students. The mobile dental bus will be outside of Walsh school on April 19th and then outside of Wharton School on April 20th.

Dental exams are required for all kindergarten, 2nd grade, 6th grade and freshman students. If your child has not seen the dentist this school year, please call for an appointment! Appointments made now will also count for next school years requirement so please come out if your student if in PreK, 5th or 8th grade to be ready for 2021-2022 registration.
