Strive Center for Autism
Brighton Playground Grand Opening
BRIGHTON FAMILIES ONLY: Early Dismissal from therapy on 7/21/23 at 2:30pm due to Drake’s Dreamland Grand Opening!
Strive Center will host a grand opening of Drake’s Dreamland on Friday, July 21, 2023 from 3:00-4:00pm. Members of the community are welcome to attend and enjoy the new equipment. Light refreshments will be served.
Strive Center for Autism is pleased to announce the opening of a brand new playground, Drake’s Dreamland, at their Brighton facility. This playground will allow children with Autism receiving services at Strive an opportunity to play outside daily. Strive Center for Autism provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for children diagnosed with Autism, ages 2-10 years old. This treatment is one of few evidence-based treatments for Autism and allows children to reach their full potential.
The new playground is 2100 square feet, with slides, swings, opportunities to climb, and musical instruments. It allows children of different abilities a chance to interact and play outside. For children at Strive Center, this is a place where kids can learn how to play safely on a playground before they head to school. The fenced area allows children to run in a contained area, as children with Autism often are not aware of the dangers posed by parking lots, roads, or bodies of water.
The playground was made possible through generous contributions from our partners:
• Corrigan Oil
• Schena Roofing
• Howell Eagles Club
• MTD Construction
• Great Lake Chapter of IIBEC
• Snider Recreational
• The Davis Family
• The Varsity Foundation
Strive Center owner, Anne Haley says, “Having a playground at Strive Center has been a dream of ours for many years because we know the value of quality outdoor play and the positive effect on gross motor development for children. We were beyond excited and grateful when a family who believes in the work we do approached us about this project. Together with several community partners, our dream has become a reality and the sweet children who attend Strive are the beneficiaries of this amazing structure!”
The owners of Strive Center for Autism, Anne and Don Haley, were approached by a family that has a strong belief in the work done here at Strive. This family wanted to begin a project with support from various community partners to make the playground dream become a reality.
Summer Fun Fridays
Each Friday in the summer, we plan for an extra fun activity and a dress up day. All the dress up days are designed to be simple ones you can do with things you have at home, please don’t feel obligated to buy anything to make these happen. Staff and children will both participate in dressing up! We'll send home a calendar with all of the dates for the summer, or you can check here for weekly details.
One of our recurring dress up days is School Spirit Day, where we all wear Strive shirts. We will provide Strive shirts for each of the children to wear.

ABA Term of the Week
One addition to our newsletter this year will be some definitions of terms we use most often in ABA. We know we use a lot of lingo and we want to help families understand it better. All of these terms will also be on our website in a glossary, so you can check them out anytime.
This week's term is VB-MAPP, the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program.
The VB-MAPP is an assessment tool that we often use with children in our centers. It is a criterion-referenced assessment that also works as a curriculum guide and skill tracking system.
The VB-MAPP was developed by Mark Sundberg, a well-known expert in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and specifically in the area of verbal behavior.
Here are some of the reasons we like the VB-MAPP:
- Criterion-referenced means that this is an assessment where a child has to demonstrate the specific skill in order to obtain the scoring point for that skill. There is not a comparison to other children, as in norm-referenced assessments. This is a close look at the skills your child has and the skills he gains.
- The skill tracking aspect of the assessment allows us to administer it multiple times and see growth. When you meet with your BCBA to go over a re-assessment, you'll see new skill boxes colored in on their assessment. The ability to use a new color shows you exactly how much growth there's been since the last assessment.
- The assessment utilizes Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior, which is a very helpful approach to teaching children with Autism. Check out our glossary page for a reminder of Skinner's Verbal operants.
- The VB-MAPP has three main sections that we use: the milestones, the transition assessment, and the barriers assessment.
- The Milestones section is all the skills in all the different areas, the main portion of the assessment.
- The Transition assessment looks at skills that are needed to transition to a lower level of care, such as a school or a group treatment option, which is less restrictive than our 1:1 model. This helps us determine when your child is ready for those next steps!
- The Barriers assessment looks at the barriers that might prevent your child from being successful in a lower level of care, and helps us pinpoint things to work on to get them ready for that important change.
Typically, we complete the VB-MAPP at intake, to get a baseline of the skills your child has and to help develop his treatment plan. After that, we use it to re-assess every six months at a minimum. We may assess sooner if there is a large amount of skill growth at a particular time, in order to keep up with your child's new developments!
To learn more about the VB-MAPP, visit the author's website.
If you have any questions about your child's VB-MAPP, please ask your BCBA. We are happy to talk about it anytime.
