Sycolin Creek Chronicle
December Edition
Principal's Corner
On behalf of the faculty and staff at Sycolin Creek, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest wishes for a very happy and healthy holiday season. I trust that you will be able to enjoy some time to rest and relax with friends and family.
During November, the highlight of the month was our Veterans Day Assembly. With the help of the PTA, Mrs. Cassada, Mrs. Miller, Dr. Bennett, Mrs. Pyle, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Jones and other school staff, we were able to host a Veterans Day celebration. Students created artwork, songs, posters, and much more to honor their relatives and all of our service men and women. It was a very meaningful performance that I hope you were able to watch as a family.
It’s hard to believe that when school resumes on January 6th we will be a few short weeks away from the mid-point of the school year! The new year is likely to bring us wintry weather conditions, which might result in school closings and/or delays. Please refer to the school closing and early dismissal information that was sent home earlier in the school year. In addition, the most up-to-date information about the impact of inclement weather conditions on the school schedule can be accessed on the Loudoun County Public School website—www.lcps.org.
Once again, best wishes for a happy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Derek Racino
Principal
Safety Drills
The staff and students practice several drills throughout the year (Fire, Severe Weather, Lock Down, and Emergency). We are dedicated to providing the safest environment for our students. If you have any questions about safety and security, please call our office.

Music Notes
November has been an exciting month in the Music Room. We began with our Veterans Day program, where students excelled in their performances and contributions. The Sycolin Creek Singers and Sycolin’s Got Beat! showcased outstanding talent. We extend our gratitude to all families who submitted photographs of their veterans, and I take great pride in the hard work displayed by all our students. Following this, we focused on songs related to Thanksgiving; upper-grade students concentrated on Major and Minor Scales, while students in kindergarten, first, and second grades emphasized rhythm activities.
In December, students will be preparing for the Holiday Sing-a-long and engaging with music from the Nutcracker. All students will have the opportunity to experience the works of Tchaikovsky and Ellington as we prepare for our Holiday Sing-a-long, which will be performed on the last day before the break. Sycolin’s Got Beat! and Sycolin Creek Singers will be performing multiple times. Please check your child’s Schoology page and watch for email updates from Mrs. Cassada to ensure you don't miss any important information.
For the Holiday Sing-a-long, we would like to feature photographs of your family's celebrations and traditions in the video. We are specifically looking for photographs related to the following holidays and winter activities:
- Chinese New Year
- Christmas
- Diwali
- Eid
- Hanukkah
- Kwanzaa
- Las Posadas
- New Year’s Eve
- Winter/ snow activities
All pictures are due by next Friday, December 6th. Please email them to megan.cassada@lcps.org. Thank you in advance for sharing your special celebrations!

December will be full of creativity and challenges in SEARCH Class. Kindergarten students will use their Perceiving and Creative Thinking Keys to camouflage a chameleon when given a background. First grade students will be "architects" as they try to build as many different houses as possible from four cubes given that the cubes must be placed face to face. Second grade students will begin learning about different types of analogies and be challenged to follow clues to arrange pentominoes. Third grade students will begin their first portfolio lesson during SEARCH. More information on the third-grade gifted evaluation process can be found on the LCPS Gifted and Talented web site.
