From the Desk of the Superintendent
Last week I provided the staff and community my goals for the next two years. Within these major priorities is a full review of our District Standards and Indicators. This includes the following Six Plus One Pillars for district and school improvement.
The first six are articulated as per the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidelines. The six are:
Leadership and Governance
Curriculum and Instruction
Assessment
Human Resources and Professional Development
Student Support; and
Finance and Asset Management
The Plus One (+1) is an additional topic that I believe is important, Privacy and Technology Security.
The entire administration is involved as members of each of these seven areas and will be responsible for providing outcomes for each. The draft report for each is being forwarded to me by this summer (June 2024) and will be shared with the public in the fall of 2024.
Lastly, thank you to all of the employees and parents/guardians who completed the surveys concerning the district. Results will be published in the next 3-4 weeks.
Wishing students, staff, families, and the community a great Martin L. King Holiday on Monday, January 15, 2024.

OMS 8th Grader Will Represent Stoughton at Project 351 Launch Day This Weekend
We are proud to share that Tana Bernard has been chosen as the O'Donnell Middle School's Project 351 Ambassador for this school year!
Each year 8th grade students are nominated for consideration to be the OMS Ambassador for Project 351. Project 351, a youth-led service movement that honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "fosters unity and strengthens the ethic of service through the engagement and enrichment of an 8th grade Ambassador from each of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts."
As the Ambassador representing Stoughton and the OMS, Tana will participate in a “launch day” during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, along with the other 8th grade students from around Massachusetts, convening in Boston for a day of service.
OMS teachers silently nominate 8th grade students for this honor, looking for students who exhibit the qualities of kindness, compassion, humility, generosity of spirit, and an ethic of service to others.
“Tana embodies Project 351 values of kindness, compassion, humility, and gratitude. She is a model student and a leader amongst her peers,” OMS Principal Katrina Crowley said. “Tana always makes an effort to say hello to people and ask them how they are. She goes out of her way to make sure everyone is included and she is never afraid to do the right thing. Tana is humble, approachable, accepting of others, and a team player. She works hard both in school and in her extracurricular activities. Tana is a member of the OMS chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, plays soccer, and participates in band. She is driven and motivated to continue to do great things and excel in whatever she sets her mind to. Tana is a change-maker and has unlimited potential to lead positive change.”
Five other students in Grade 8 were nominated to be the Project 351 ambassador: Brennan Cox, Valentina de Carvalho, Eden Gonsalves, Jackson Gosule, and Victor Pereira. These students are recognized for their hard work, character, and commitment to service.
Congratulations to all of the OMS Project 351 nominees! And, we wish Tana all the best as she represents Stoughton and OMS this weekend!
Tana and the other Project 351 nominees are pictured here with Mrs. Crowley.

Wilkins School Coat Drive
The Wilkins School Student Council, under the direction of advisor Mrs. Pearl, organized a coat drive to help keep people in the local area warm this winter season. The Student Council members are pictured here holding some of the 48 new or gently worn coats that were donated. Student Council members went to each class to announce the coat drive and encourage their fellow students (and school community) to donate. The donated coats were given to Anton's Cleaners, through a partnership with Jordan’s Furniture, to be cleaned and distributed to those in need. Keep up the good work!
Hour of Code at the Gibbons School
Here is a look at some recent "hour of code" activities students completed in Mrs. Kane's technology class at the Gibbons School. Simply put, coding tells a machine which actions to perform and how to complete tasks. Students used Code.org, Tynker and Tynker Jr., Ozobots, Osmo Coding, and Kodable to practice coding.
SHS Choir Director Part of Holiday Pops Performance
Chris Weigel, a choir director at Stoughton High, spent the holiday season performing with the Boston Pops and Metropolitan Chorale for Holiday Pops!
Mr. Weigel was a bass for the Holiday Singers octet, a small group that performs for the children’s matinees with the Pops at Symphony Hall. He also joined the Chorale and Pops for their Holiday Pops tour, providing vocal percussion and beatboxing.
Additionally, he was cover for the soloist in the Vaughan Williams piece, “Fantasia on Christmas Carols.” And, Mr. Weigel also read “A Visit from St. Nicholas” backed by the Pops! (There are a couple of video clips posted on our Instagram page!)
