Akins PTSA Newsletter/Boletín PTSA

Things are only speeding up as we approach the end of the first semester! Read through this newsletter to keep up with what is happening with the Akins PTSA.

Our next PTSA meeting is Wednesday, December 6, at 5:30 pm in room 146 (the CCC). The agenda for the December meeting can be found here. Akins PTSA has a tradition of celebrating the coming winter break with a potluck meal at our December meeting. If you'd like to bring a dish or dessert to share, you are welcome to do so. We will also have babysitting available at this meeting if you need to bring a younger sibling with you.

If you'd like to get more involved with PTSA this year but can't attend the meetings, reach out to us at akinshsptsa@gmail.com and we'll figure out how we can connect. Agendas and minutes from all meetings, as well as links to all previous newsletters, can be found here.

The quickest and easiest way to help is to join the PTSA today. Your membership dues allow us to fund teacher appreciation events, parent education, student organization grants, and much more. If we all give a little, PTSA can do a lot!

Families and community members of Akins ECHS, y’all showed up BIG for our teachers and staff! Our second annual Pies for Teachers project was a great success and every staff member on campus got to take home a pie to their families for the break.

Special thanks goes out to community member Jessica Rest and her family, who contributed and delivered an astounding 100 homemade pies. Jess, you're a rock star!

We appreciate everyone's help in making this event possible and can't wait for next year!

Our new donation bin, Phill, has been delivered to campus and can be found in the middle of the parking lot near the South 1st entrance with the new traffic signal. Bring any soft good items like clothing, shoes, and bedding (see full list below) in plastic bags and place them in the bin. Akins PTSA will receive 20 cents per pound for all donations. Let's start spring cleaning early!

The best way for our community to be successful is when everyone works together, and that includes students. We would like to boost our student membership this year to allow their voices to be heard in our planning and decision-making.

We hold monthly student PTSA meetings during FIT and have opportunities for students to serve in leadership roles as committee chairs or even as parliamentarian of the PTSA. This is a great way for your student to get involved and to build their resume.

This is also the first year that the PTSA will offer student scholarships and the opportunity for students to earn PTSA service cords. Please encourage your student to join PTSA so that they are eligible for these opportunities.

Student dues are only $10 and can be paid in cash at a meeting or online here.

The Akins Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is a non-profit volunteer organization which serves to support the students, teachers, and staff at Akins Early College High School through volunteering and fundraising.

We have more than 2,600 students at Akins and our goal this year is 150 members. So far, we have 90.

As a member of the PTSA you can attend short monthly meetings throughout the year that will enable you to make suggestions and provide your input. If you don't have time to attend meetings but still want to help, you can choose to become a member and your dues will financially support our annual goals. You can also donate to specific projects at the same link below.

By getting involved or just paying your membership dues, you’ll be part of the solution, helping to make a positive change for our campus and our community. There is no wrong way to PTSA!

What is the CAC?

Campus Advisory Councils are committees of parents, students, business and community representatives, teachers, principals, and other campus staff. The formation of CACs is required by state law (Texas Education Code, §11.251).

What does the CAC do?

Specific functions of CACs include providing review and comment on:

• Campus Educational Program
• Campus Performance
• Campus Improvement Plan
• Campus Staff Development Plan
• Campus-Level Waiver Requests to the State
• Campus Budget

When does the CAC Meet?

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month form 6:30 - 7:30 in room 146. CAC members are strongly encouraged to also attend our monthly PTSA meetings, conveniently scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm.
