ESD Superintendent Update
Some thoughts for the starting school year

October 2023
Hello Families,
As the first trimester draws to a close, we are genuinely excited about the strides we've made in boosting student achievement. The September parent conference week provided our families with a timely opportunity to review student baseline data on i-Ready diagnostic assessments and collaborate with their child's teacher to plan the next steps for instruction. As we visit school sites and walk through classrooms, I see our teachers seamlessly integrating instructional strategies from our professional development training that enhance student learning in math and reading/literacy.
We also want to thank our students, staff, and families for participating in the Districtwide Disaster Drill. This annual drill provides students, staff, and district leadership with an important opportunity to practice disaster response and promote our overall preparedness.
Upcoming events to include on your calendar:
Friday, October 27
First Trimester Ends - Report Cards are available by Friday, November 3.
Saturday, November 4
E3 Foundation Mystical Magical Fun Run at Central Park in Rancho Cucamonga. Sign up here!
Sunday, November 5
End of daylight saving time and clocks turn back one hour.
Friday, November 10
Veterans Day - No School/Holiday
When families and schools work together, students are more successful. As we transition into the second trimester of the school year, I look forward to even greater levels of student success.

Our Commitment to Students and Their Learning Environment
In the Etiwanda School District, we recognize that families want their children to be cared for and valued, as well as educated. Our district’s mission has always been to ensure that “students achieve academic excellence and develop respect for self and others.”
Administrators and teachers work together to foster a school climate that encourages kindness and regard for others and promotes these positive expectations for behavior: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. We continue to teach our students to act with kindness, build relationships with students from diverse backgrounds, and understand other points of view.
We want to affirm our commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and staff. Our district has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, or the use of racial slurs. Such behaviors are not only against our code of conduct but also against the values of empathy and understanding that we aim to instill in our students. Together, we can ensure that our schools remain places of compassion, unity, and learning.
Etiwanda Intermediate Community Closet
The Etiwanda Intermediate Student Services team held their grand opening of the first district Community Closet, serving students and families that attend Etiwanda Intermediate and feeder elementary schools, Terra Vista, Windrows, Grapeland, and Perdew Elementary.
Families are invited to schedule an appointment to shop in the Community Closet. Eligible families and students must attend EIS or one of the EIS feeder elementary schools. Shopping opportunities are available once a month, and students must be accompanied by an adult. There is no cost for the clothing selected during the shopping; however, students and families are limited to one bag of clothing per shopping event.

Star Wars Reads Day
Thank you to students, staff, and families who made the Star Wars Reads Day on Saturday, October 14, a resounding success. It was fun to see adults and students dressed as their favorite Star Wars character and join library staff in building Legos, competing in a Star Wars Amazing Race, and exploring reading and puzzle stations. A highlight for many was the special guests from the 501st Legion who kept a watchful eye on the day's events. This annual event one-day event, organized by our librarians and library clerks, raises funds to support Etiwanda School District libraries.
