Dear Kindergarten Families
Wow! Your child has almost made it through their 1st year of school! It flies by! What's next?
To enter 1st grade successfully please work on these things over the summer...
1) Read everyday
2) Write at least three sentences on a topic. Focus on using sounds, sight words, and spacing
3) Addition and subtraction practice
4) Writing to 100 and counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's
5) Practice sight words daily. Spell some in the car for easy practice
Have a wonderful summer! We will miss you all!

Hello First Grade Families
Hello First Grade Families! It is so hard to believe that it is already June! This year has continued to bring many new situations and challenges, but has given us the chance to work with your children and watch them learn and grow! We are so proud of all of the children and hope that everyone has a wonderful summer vacation! Make sure to have your children do a little reading and math each day over the break. They have worked so hard this year and we don't want them to slide backward over the summer vacation. Visiting your local Public Library is a great way to find new favorite books and even some old familiar ones. The library has great summer reading programs with fun incentives for the kiddos! Make sure to check it out!
Have a fun and healthy summer!
Mrs. Garden, Mrs. Mounsey, and Mrs. Stremer
Greeting Second Grade Families
Hello Second Grade Families! June is a time to reflect on the growth and development of our second graders this year. We know it was an adjustment getting back into the routines and expectations of in-person learning for all students. We are proud of the hard work students put in to make this year a success. Please encourage your child to write in a journal about his/her summer vacation, and practice math skills to prevent summer learning loss. You can check out books at the library or find great books online. Parents, thank you for your help and support this year. We greatly appreciate you. Have a fun and safe summer!
Educationally yours,
The Second Grade Team

Hey there Third Grade Families
Yay! We made it through the 2021-2022 school year! We want to thank each of you for sharing your child with us this year. It has been amazing to see the students grow academically and handle the difficulties that this year has given us. Please check with your child to see if they made their goals in NWEA reading and math. MSTEP scores will be out soon ... We are proud of the scores that our Mustangs earned. While your family is enjoying a much needed summer vacation, encourage your child to read as much as they can as well as write in a journal to capture those fantastic summer memories! We hope you all have an amazing summer!

Hello Fourth Grade Families
Hello Fourth Grade Families! Our last Rawsonville newsletter for the school year is bittersweet as this year is coming to a close. Each fourth grader demonstrated resiliency in the midst of another challenging academic year. I am proud to say we persevered "Together".
In honor of our 4th graders, our team would like to celebrate their accomplishments and honor them with a sincere Clapout on Wednesday, June 8th @ 2:30p.m. from the parking lot. Families will be welcome to take photos of their child following the clapout. A reminder invitation will be sent home soon. During our scheduled lunch time, we will also have a picnic outside, distribute 4th grade Completion Certificates, and have some yummy treats. We are so proud of our students and wish them well as they experience learning and making new friends as "Middle Schoolers" at Owen Intermediate.
We hope you find comfort, peace, and relaxation during the warm summer months. Get outside for some fun family activities, enjoy an afternoon bike ride, cook your favorite meals together, and create everlasting memories. Please encourage your child to read over break, practice writing skills by keeping a journal, make observations of the environment around him/her like a scientist, practice multiplication and long division, create a map of new explorations like a historian, and incorporate physical activity into the day!
Sending all of our Rawsonville families much love and gratitude.
Educationally yours,
Ms. Ali, Ms. Dagenais, and Mrs. Gyulveszi

Summer Tips for Parents
Children have a lot of free time on their hands and it can be overwhelming to maintain their day-to-day activities. So how can parents keep their children structured, organized and active in the summer months?
Schedule fun. Together with your children, come up with your summer “bucket list” or list of activities the family wants and can afford to do this summer—trip to the zoo, beach vacation, backyard camping adventure, etc.
Resist the urge to overschedule. During the school year, parents know exactly when and where their kids will be each day. When it comes to the summer, parents often feel a need to schedule every minute of the day from drama camp to soccer practice to carpools to the park. While having a consistent routine is important, it’s also imperative to allow time for unstructured downtime.
Set aside time each day. The biggest mistake parents can make is getting caught up in all of those posts and pictures of other parents’ summer activities on social media. So, whether it’s running through the sprinkler together, roasting marshmallows in the backyard or even just counting the stars on a blanket before bedtime, do at least one thing a day to connect and have fun.
Encourage your child to try something new this summer. There’s no time like the summer to encourage your child to try a new activity. Maybe he wants to take swimming lessons, or a painting class, take-up a new sport or attend a summer camp. New activities encourage brain development and build your child’s focus and creativity. But remember, don’t go overboard in the scheduling of activities!
Limit technology. When it’s hot outside and kids are bored, screen time has a way of swallowing up all of their time. Parents can easily fall into the trap of technology becoming the babysitter. Replace that screen time with daily reading and regular trips to the library. Books open the imagination and creativity in every child.
Create structure and set boundaries. Summer routines are sure to be different than school routines, but it’s important to remember the necessity of routines. Children need to be freed of the tight structure of the school year, but they also need the security of knowing that some things will remain the same. Keep the same bedtime, maintain the same chore schedule, etc. You can easily discourage behavioral problems by ensuring a structured environment.

Reading Tips: Read with your child everyday using the 10-10-10 model (10 minutes of reading on your own, 10 minutes of reading with a partner, and 10 minutes of someone reading to you) and let your child choose books he/she are interested in.
Writing Tip: Create a Personal Journal. Over summer break, begin a daily personal journal! Write down observations, thoughts, feelings, ideas, inventions, directions, ingredients, thoughtful notes, dreams, notes to your future self, things to remember, and quotes from people who inspire you. Be sure to include drawings, photos, diagrams, and more!
Enjoy!
Best wishes! Mrs. Swingle

Staying safe from COVID-19 Information... We all need to do our part to keep schools open to in-person learning
The mask mandate has been lifted and is now recommended but not mandatory.
Maintaining the health and safety of our school community is of utmost importance, particularly during this unprecedented pandemic situation. Providing a safe environment is a partnership between parents/guardians and the school district. VBPS has put into place many measures to keep our students and staff safe while they are in school. We ask that our parents and guardians help to prevent the spread of COVID, as well as other illnesses by:
- Following the COVID-19 checklist guidelines
- Reporting to the nurse if your child or any household member tests positive for COVID, or if they have an actual or suspected COVID exposure
- Keeping your child home when they are sick,
- Promptly picking your child up if they become sick at school,
- Alerting the school nurse about any planned travel to discuss the required post-quarantine guideline, prior to sending your child back to school
Please contact Nurse Dionisia Munoz with any questions or concerns related to COVID-19 or other health-related issues involving the school. dmunoz@vanburenschools.net
Students who are sick must not attend school. If a student presents to be sick when at school they will be sent home and provided instructions about the possible need to quarantine. Siblings of students who are ill may also need to quarantine. We rely on our County Health Department to guide us accordingly.
