The tragic death of a Hawaii High School student while walking to school on Wednesday is an unfortunate reminder to us all to practice good driving habits to and from school.
Hawaii laws currently prohibit:
- The use of handheld cell phones (Hands-free operation is allowed)
- Texting while driving
- Drivers under the age of 18 from using a mobile electronic communication device of any kind, even if hands-free.
For everyone's safety, please make sure you are not using a handheld cell phone while operating your vehicle. We've seen far too many drivers during the drop-off or pick-up period on their cell phones.
If you have children to pick-up from the A+ program, the front parking lot is not open for parking until 2:30 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) and 1:45 pm (Wednesday). Additionally, there have been parents trying to do A+ pick-up using the curbside pick-up lane during the first 15 minute after-school period. The intent of the cubside lane during this period is for the pick-up for children not attending the A+ program. Anyone trying to park before these times to pick-up at A+ will be asked to park off-campus.
There are also times where we've witnessed parents making a U-TURN on Leahi Avenue during the busy pick-up period. This practice not only causes unnecessary back-ups, but also increases the chances of accidents occurring.
