Martin Luther King Jr. and Pope Francis
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most important African-American leaders in U.S. history and one of the iconic figures of the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. King's fight against discrimination and segregation changed American history and gave hope to millions of a future of equality.
One of the most inspiring moments of King's life was the August 28, 1963, March on Washington, and his "I Have a Dream" speech, where he stated, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Pope Francis noted the importance of King's dream, one that continues to inspire Americans and people from around the world to this day:
"Here too I think of the march ... (read the article here).

Sunday Gospel Challenges - Living Our Faith
Justice Challenge - January 14, 2024 ⢠2nd Week in Ordinary Time
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on January 18. So often in our world, we emphasize our differences with others instead of the things we share in common. Yet our God is everyoneâs God, and Jesus came as a universal Saviorâfor everyone, everywhere, all the time. If those of us who believe in Jesus canât get along, how will we ever bring peace to our world? Your challenge this week is to participate in this special time by praying for unity among all Christians. Then let your prayer lead you to action. What is one thing you can do as a family or household to be more connectedâwith the Lutheran community down the block, or the Methodist family that lives next door? How can you celebrate with them our common belief in Jesus?
Care for Creation Tips - January 14, 2024 ⢠2nd Week in Ordinary Time
âSpeak, Lord, for your servant is listening.â â1 Samuel 3:9. Like Samuel, are we attentively listening to the calling of God? Pope Francis explains in Laudato Siâ, âWe are called to be instruments of God our Father so that our planet might be what he desired when he created it and correspond with his plan for peace, beauty, and fullness.â This week, start a habit to become a better instrument for God. Collect rainwater to water indoor plants, eat less meat, combine trips to reduce car/gas usage, or take other steps to care for our common home.
