Activity Buses
We are so thrilled to report that we will have activity buses run after school this year so students can access after school groups, support, and attend assigned consequences so as not to interfere with the school day. Bus #2058 will run every Tuesday and Wednesday, departing Champe at 5:25pm.
Did you know?
* Math lab has been converted to "Learning Lab" which students can access by choice or teacher/admin assignment during study hall or early release. The Lab is open all blocks and is staffed with teachers and peer tutors to provide academic support or time to complete re-assessments.
* Champe staff members Coach Carter and Ms. Roos are offering before-school study hall every Tuesday and Thursday (8:15-9:15am) in room 2207, starting September 6. NCAA eligibility advice and academic help will be offered during the study hall.
* Also, Champe has a dedicated prayer room (instead of a section of the auditorium) this year for students to access during lunch and at fall prayer times.
* We have a one-stop-shop of resources for families, which can be accessed here.
* FREE tutoring is available! LCPS is partnering with Tutor.com to provide all students with free, online tutoring. Tutor.com, which is a service of the Princeton Review, is personalized to meet the individual needs of students. Tutor.com’s tutors are available 24 hours a day and can provide tutoring support in a wide variety of subjects. This service will be available to LCPS students starting Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Tutor.com will be accessed through a student's Schoology account. Connecting with a tutor is near-immediate and is available wherever a student has computer access. There is no limit to the number of times a LCPS student can connect with a tutor. Students can also drop off their written work and receive detailed feedback from a tutor within a day. In addition, the platform provides access to self-guided resources, including Advanced Placement videos and SAT/ACT Essentials courses from the Princeton Review.

10 Year Anniversary
Now that it's September, we are in full prep for a day of celebrating our tenth year of excellence in conjunction with Homecoming. Sponsors are still needed to support our tenth year. Donations can be made in SchoolCash Online. Thank you so much!
Testing
LCPS administers NWEA’s MAP Growth tests to high school students enrolled in Algebra I and Geometry to determine their instructional readiness level and measure academic growth throughout the school year and from year to year. The MAP Growth testing schedule is:
Fall: Aug. 29-Sept. 23
Winter: Jan. 2-20
Spring: May 8-Jun. 2
MAP Growth tests are adaptive, providing a detailed picture of what your student knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below grade level expectations. MAP Growth tests also provide immediate and accurate information about your student’s learning, enabling teachers to personalize instruction to meet students’ needs. For more information about the MAP Growth test, visit: https://www.lcps.org/Page/217792
Additionally, students in grades 9-12 will take the online, computer adaptive i-Ready assessment in their English course:
Fall: Aug. 29-Sept. 23
Winter: Jan. 2-20
Spring: May 8-Jun. 2
The assessment data is used by English teachers to differentiate instruction and identify literacy needs.
Parents will receive a score report with their student’s reading achievement scores several weeks after the test window, in ParentVUE under the Documents tab.
Questions about the i-Ready Assessment can be directed to your student’s English teacher.
World Language Credit Through Testing (CTT)
Students eligible to test for the Seal of Biliteracy may register for their test now through October 21. If you have questions after reviewing the info below, please contact your language teacher.
School Pictures
Grades 9-11 will have their school portraits taken on September 27-28 through their English classes.
Senior portrait makeups are October 27-28 at JCHS.
Senior Yearbook Ads
THE QUEST invites you to include personalized messages in your graduate’s senior yearbook. These special tributes can come from parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, pets, etc. They can be purchased for graduates, groups of friends, and/or entire teams or clubs. Please see the .pdf below or click here for size pricing, helpful info for creating your ad, and how to submit your order. If you have trouble opening the doc, please scroll to the top of the newsletter and click the header to launch the newsletter in your internet browser.
PTSA
Our school is strong because our families are involved. We invite all students, parents, and staff members to start or renew your annual PTSA membership.
Please join us for our first meeting of the school year in the JCHS Library at 7pm on September 28. We will talk about activities we have planned for this year, opportunities for volunteering, and much more. We look forward to seeing you there!
Join the PTSA!
The 14th Annual Asha-Jyothi (AJ) 5K Run/Walk is Sunday, September 18, in Fairfax Corner. AJ, a volunteer-based non-profit organization, will donate every registration from our school to be used towards JCHS’s STEM needs.
The Fun Run is $20 and the 5K is $30 per participant; register now before the price goes up on September 10! At the time of registration, please use code “AJ4Schools” to get a discount for the 5K Run and select the school name “John Champe High School.”
All ages are welcome to participate, including enjoying the delicious food and Bollywood dance/music after the main event.
SAT Practice
When it comes to the SAT, earning higher scores means having more options for your future. There is no better way to improve your scores than to practice!
For just $20, take a full-length practice SAT exam with Huntington Learning Center on Saturday, September 24, at 9 a.m. in the JCHS cafeteria. Students from any school can register for the test. Proceeds go to the Champe PTSA, which supports our students and teachers.
Huntington Learning Center will provide you with a comprehensive score report and teach you how to analyze your results. Since the scores are not reported and will only be seen by you, this is a risk-free opportunity. Don't miss out!
CHARGE Up!
Clubs
This week, students will be able to visit the club fair during lunches and access the virtual club fair listing of active groups for this fall. Please encourage students to find at least one way to connect at school. Data show that students actively engaged in school life perform better academically and have fewer attendance and discipline incidences.
Theatre
The Avalon Theatre Company is holding its fall audition meeting Sept. 6 prior to auditions beginning Sept. 7. The tech interest meeting will take place Sept. 20. Will your contribution be on stage or behind the scenes? Give it some thought and get to the meetings!
Athletics
We love our student athletes, and we love our students who support our athletes. One easy way to join is participating in spirit days.
Sept. 9: Soccer Moms and BBQ Dads; feel free to keep that gear on for the Back to School Bash that night!
Sept. 16: Red Out
Sept. 23: Neon
Sept. 30: Class Colors (Freshmen = white; Sophomores = silver; Juniors = navy; Seniors = all three)
Another way is volunteering at concessions. Check out the openings still available for fall sports concessions in the sign-up here.
College and Career Center
Ms. King in the College and Career Center shares several newsletters throughout the year. You can check here for her post-secondary newsletter, here for work opportunities, and here for scholarship information.
There is a college fair coming up on September 25th at Independence High School (3-5pm). Click HERE to register.
Additionally, college representative visits will be starting up in the CCC September 12 and going through December 8. Students can sign up for specific visits in Naviance (instructions are in student email accounts).
Homecoming
We're gearing up for a great week of Homecoming festivities and anniversary celebrations at the end of September. We'll be looking for participation and help from students to make each event a success. Help encourage your student to be involved to make it a great memory for them!
Excellence Everywhere Spotlight
This edition's excellence spotlight goes to the staff members recognized at the back-to-school faculty meeting as MAGIC Makers at Champe. All three worked over the summer, beyond contractual expectations, to work with families and students prior to the start of school. Congratulations and many thanks go to:
Ms. Shun Carter and Mr. Vince Kimball, SCA sponsors, for their work on Camp Champe.
Mr. Marshal Ausberry, Special Education Dean, for his diligence with matters pertaining to special education.

Reminders:
First Day of School Information
Please sign into ParentVUE to complete the Online Verification process as part of Loudoun County Public Schools’ First Day of School Information initiative. This process is required for all families to review and update important information about their students as we begin the 2022-23 school year, and must be completed no later than Friday, September 23. Once completed, you will be able to view student schedules and bus information in ParentVUE.
If you do not have a ParentVUE account, please contact the school of any of your students to request an Activation Letter. For more information about this Online Verification process, along with FAQs about the First Day of School, please visit: www.lcps.org/FirstDay.
School Nutrition
Students are able to purchase both breakfast and lunch at school. Breakfast starts at $2 and lunch at $3.15. You can click here to see the full price list, access the cafeteria payment portal to put money on your student's account, and check menus. Remember, the Titan payment portal is new, so you may need to create your account still; also, this is a separate account from the one you will use for school-based purchases. Click here to read more and access the free/reduced meal application.
Online Payments
LCPS has moved to a different online payment system this year. You can click here to go to SchoolCash to register or sign in. It is very important that you register, as you are only able to view items for purchase if you have registered. Additionally, the system itself is a little different in how it's formatted and how staff members arrange items to be set up for students and families to view. We appreciate your patience with us, but very soon you will be able to view items necessary for your student, athlete, or community contributions like the 10-year sponsorships or classwide donations.
