Living and Learning with Respect
Wednesday 7th August 2019
Classes hold Circle Time sessions weekly or fortnightly as a chance for children to voice their opinions on all sorts of issues in a safe forum. This safe forum allows children to seek solutions and solve problems collectively while developing positive relationships between children. It aims to give them tools to engage with and listen to each other. The circle encourages unity, respect, turn-taking and working together towards a shared outcome.
It also helps children work on five key skills, without which Circle Time doesn't work: thinking, listening, looking, speaking and concentrating.
Circle Time has many benefits for children as individuals and their school. These include:
- Improved speaking and listening skills.
- Increased self-esteem.
- A sense of community.
- An understanding of how their behaviour affects others.
- Improved emotional intelligence.
- Improved problem-solving skills.
- A sense of responsibility.
- Improved relationships between children, and between children and their teacher.
In summary, Circle Time for each class enables pupils of all ages, at their own level, to reflect on aspects of their lives, to discuss moral and social issues and to express with confidence their understanding of right and wrong and their sense of justice. Pupils learn to listen to others, to be tolerant of other viewpoints and to respect fellow pupils.
Our next parent morning tea session will be on Tuesday 3rd September. Chat will be around 'Learner Agency at Ngaere'.

Friday - Green Mufti Day
The teachers and support staff of Ngaere School are joining with their colleagues all over the country on 9 August to call on the government to give primary and intermediate principals a fair deal. And we need your support as we stand up for our principal, and all principals.
Teachers recently won pay parity with their secondary colleagues, because a teacher is a teacher, regardless of the age of their students. But the government refused to give primary and intermediate principals parity with principals of comparably sized secondary schools, or any support for growing workloads. In small schools, principals are doing a complex job but often without any extra support, and while teaching as well. And these principals are often paid less than some teachers in large schools.
On Friday 9th August, staff and students will be showing Mrs England our appreciation for her. Please support our Principal, Mrs England, and all principals of Aotearoa, who do such a vital job leading the teaching and learning in our schools. Let her know she is valued, by telling her in person, or by spreading your support via social media or word of mouth.
We’re calling on the Government to do the right thing by principals. It’s only fair.
Please note there is no cost for the 'Green Mufti Day'.
