March High School Social Studies
March 2022 High School Social Studies Newsletter
March is Women's History Month & March 25th is Medal of Honor Day
As we begin March, we take time to remember the contributions of notable and ordinary women, in hopes that the day will soon come when it's impossible to teach or learn history without remembering these contributions. It has been annually observed in the United States and other countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, every March since 1987. Please use this link as well as the suggested instructional calendars embedded in your learning networks to support instruction around this required instructional mandate: s.1003.42(2)(q), F.S., The study of women’s contributions to the United States.
March 25th - Medal of Honor Day
In Florida, March 25 of each year is designated as “Medal of Honor Day” and Medal of Honor has been added to s. 1003.42, F.S., Required Instruction. This is a perfect opportunity to embed the Medal of Honor Character Development Curriculum and promote these core values as we launch the 4th quarter.

REMINDER - ABC - CLIO US GOVERNMENT DATABASE - RESOURCE
A nation founded upon rights and liberties, the United States grants Americans freedoms of expression that simply don't exist in many parts of the world. With such privileges, Americans have the power to shape their government and, in turn, to determine how they are able to live their lives. Understanding how the government works, therefore, is important in order for students not only to succeed in school but also to grow into thoughtful participants in civic life.
American Government explains the nuanced structure and foundations of U.S. government and connects these concepts to current issues and questions about political processes, constitutional rights, and international relations. It identifies values the government has traditionally upheld and how the government of today continues to reflect those values, while simultaneously examining changes that the government has undergone since the nation's founding.
Highlights
- Houses more than 13,000 primary and secondary sources, including 2,500 documents, 4,000 images, 250 maps, and 250 audio and video recordings
- Presents biographies, including portraits of such important historical and present government figures as the Founding Fathers, former presidents, and Supreme Court justices, as well as a continually updated roster of such key members of government as the President, cabinet members, Congress members, and state governors
- Poses such questions as "Do states have a right to impose anti-immigration laws?"; "Should the U.S. government reinstate the draft?"; and "When does the public accept presidents' expansion of their executive powers?" that nurture learners' critical thinking skills by inviting them to examine controversial issues
- Builds students' contextual understanding of key concepts in American government with more than 260 Course Essential Video modules recorded by master teachers and scholars
- Features the CLIOview tool that allows students to make comparisons and graph statistical data at the state level, with more than 20 demographic categories including electoral results, federal spending, and more to choose from

Curriculum Resource 2021 - High School
Simulations encourage students to “learn by doing.” The goal in using simulations in the classroom is for students to understand a concept or historical experience by acting it out. Creating a kinesthetic experience isn’t quite the same as reading about something in a book. Below you will find simulation activities that can be used in your upcoming curriculum.
World History-Treaty of Versaille Simulation
US History- Cuban Missile Crisis Simulation/Role Play
Economics- Claim Your Future Students are given a career with an annual salary, and then are asked to make certain budget and lifestyle choices based on that salary. Will they be able to afford the house they want, or have to rent with an apartment they share? Is their career choice enough to sustain their organic food tastes, or are they better off eating “basic” food?
US Government- Executive Command iCivics Simulation: Ever wanted to be President for a day? In Executive Command, you can be President for four years! Try to accomplish what you set as your agenda while facing the challenges and responsibilities that crop up along the way. Being commander-in-chief and chief executive is no easy job! See how you do!
NIE - Newspapers in Education - Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. Women’s History Month began as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week." Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as "Women’s History Week." In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month." Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.”

FLORIDA HOLOCAUST MUSEUM TRAINING SERIES
Teacher Training Series:
Jews of Spanish Heritage in the Holocaust:
for Spanish, ESL, and teachers of any subject who teach Heritage Spanish Speakers
Centropa offers teachers primary sources (annotated photographs, interviews), and secondary sources (award-winning, short multimedia films, none longer than 30 minutes) that teachers use to create virtual and in-class projects for teaching digital literacy, critical thinking, and global awareness. All are free of charge.
The Florida Holocaust Museum has provided Holocaust education across the state for 30 years. All primary and secondary sources shared by the Museum are free to teachers and students. We have digital and print content for grades K-12.
Webinar #1: Wednesday, March 2 at 5:30 PM – 7 PM
Overview: This training will introduce educators to how to teach about the Holocaust using The FHM and Centropa’s resources and will feature an introduction to the history of Sephardic Jewry through Centropa’s films. It is geared towards teaching Spanish-speaking learners.
Webinar #2: Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 PM – 7 PM
Overview: Educators are highly encouraged to attend our March 2nd training session before attending this webinar. The FHM and Centropa will present resources and lesson ideas for educators to teach about two anniversaries coming up in the spring:
- March: the 80th anniversary of when the Nazis emptied the hospital in Belgrade, where the father of one of Centropa’s interviewees, Matilda Cerge (neé Kalef), was staying. Centropa tells Matilda’s family story — they were hidden by a Catholic priest, and one sister grew up to become one of Serbia’s famous opera singers—in one of their most popular films, “Three Promises: The Story of the Kalefs of Belgrade.”
- April: The 30th anniversary of the Bosnian War. Centropa’s 12-minute film, “Survival in Sarajevo,” tells the story of how Jews—Holocaust survivors and their children—opened the doors of their synagogue to Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox Serbs during the Bosnian war. Centropa’s most popular film, it shows how Holocaust survivors made a choice to be inclusive during an ethnic war. The Florida Holocaust Museum will present their collection of art created by children in Sarajevo during the war in the 1990s.
