In the picture on the right is a picture of the Mariner's Compass, a device that used to be used to help with navigation
Invention of the compass
The compass was invented by a Chinese dynasty between 206 and 221 B.C.
This compass was not first used then though, the compass was first used by a Chinese voyager whose name is Zheng He.
What year did it originate
This compass originated between the years of 221 and 206 B.C. but it was not quite used at that time.
Importance
The mariner's compass was a very important thing in the renaissance because it helped a lot of explorers with a ton of navigation. It allowed the users of the compass to determine directions much easier for sailors and explorers.
How has it changed throughout the years?
The Mariner's compass has only changed in the looks, but not in the way it is used. The compass has a magnetic pointer inside that is accurately aligned with the earth's magnetic pull and that's how it tells you if you're going either north or south. Pretty much over time the sailors and explorers would use the points in the compass from starting at the number 32 because it reminded them of a certain flower. During the 1800's the circle would be spread into 360 degrees but the sailors still had a system they would use called the "point" system so if their ship turned they would be able to tell how many degrees they turned.
