A Message from the WSD Administration

The Power of Teamwork, Renovation Information Night

by Greg Marino

The power of teamwork is not something that many of us would need much convincing about. Hopefully we have all had an experience being a part of something much bigger than ourselves; something that required much more than just us doing our part with quality and precision. We know that to accomplish something truly exceptional it often takes the work of a well-functioning team of people dedicated to a common purpose and goal. The images I’ve included here truly help to bring this point home for me. (The image above is of the astronaut crew of the Apollo 13 mission). I am so fortunate in my role as District Principal to have the regular opportunity to witness team work at its best right here in our two amazing schools. There are visible student and adult examples of this exceptional teamwork each week. Whether it is one of our fine athletic teams, or students engaged in collaborative learning projects, or adults engaged in collaborative problem-solving in support of student learning, there is never a shortage of modelling effective teamwork here at WSD. One shining example of incredible teamwork currently front and center is the School Drama Club’s musical production of The Sound of Music. Over 70 students have been working diligently over the past few months - both under the lights on stage, as well as behind the scenes with the stage and production crews to bring this musical classic to life. Congratulations to Director, Sean Moran, and his entire team on pulling together a wonderful show that I know audiences will love. Some ABS students were treated to the debut performances and the reviews have been stellar so far!

WCS Renovation Info Night:

Another very busy team taking on an ambitious challenge is the WCS Renovation Project Team. As you have heard in previous editions of The Bell, this team has been hard at work on planning and preparation for WCS Renovation scheduled to begin at the start of this summer. On behalf of the team, I would like to invite you to a parent information session about the project on Wednesday, April 19, 6:30 - 7:45. Come and meet key members of the team, including representatives from our architecture and construction firms. You will learn about the scope of the project, construction schedule, classroom moves and relocations, and other important details related to the project. There will also be time put aside to answer your specific questions. I hope you will consider attending what I expect to be a very informative event.

As always, I thank you for your continued partnership in the education of our children.

Congratulations and Thank You!

Congratulations to all of the winners of this year's LuckyU Raffle! Student winners will hear from either his/her classroom teacher or the activity host(s) within the next week, if you have not already, and activities will begin to happen over the next few weeks. In many cases events must work around school schedules as well as weather so your patience is much appreciated. For the third year in a row, this event sold over 4000 tickets! Teachers and staff from both schools are volunteering their time, creativity and resources with our students, and without all of them this event truly would not be possible. Having so many students eager to spend time with the Williston Schools faculty and staff shows how truly Lucky we are. Thank you to all those who signed up to host a raffle event - your willingness to continue to go above and beyond is very much appreciated. A huge Thank You to all of the parents who volunteered to help sell tickets - both early morning at ABS and lunchtime at WCS.

8th Grade Challenge Book Drive

My name is Olivia Cabral, and I am in 8th grade. For my Eighth Grade Challenge, I am holding a book drive for the Bookmobile and the Summer Reading Program. If you would like to donate some books, they would need to be new or like-new condition. They can be books for all ages. I hope to help the community to enhance the literary skills of people of all ages with your donations. So, if you have any books in good condition that you have and would like to donate, please put them in my book box outside of the main office at WCS. The donation box is bright blue and it has a white poster on it with the words “Book Drive” in silver letters. Keep an eye out for it! The book box will be there from March 27-31. Thank you so much!

Intra-district School Choice Options

With the merger of our governing boards comes Intra-district School Choice options for our families. Please see the proposed policy and draft guidelines and procedures - linked below - for requesting placement for your student in a school other than his/her town of residence assignment. The board has reviewed this policy and is anticipating adoption at its April 4 board meeting. They have authorized the distribution of this information prior to adoption because of the narrow timeline in this our first year. For this same reason, applications will be accepted for this one year until April 30, 2017.

If you have interest in enrolling your student in a school other than the assigned school of residence, please complete the linked application form or contact Sandy Raymond at 383.1224 to receive a copy.
