Our Headteacher's Message
Dear families,
May I begin by wishing our vibrant community, our wonderful students, our committed staff, our families, a very warm, peaceful and happy Christmas festive period. To our rich and diverse community, let this two-week break remind us all of the true power of Christmas – a time for family, for forgiveness and for understanding. The birth of Christ is a message of hope. As headteacher, I am so proud of our myriad achievements this term – in the classroom, in the exam halls and on the playing fields. Our collective achievements only reinforce to me the value of our holistic, inclusive Catholic education; an education for everyone.
I look forward to the new term, in the knowledge of what has gone before and in the confidence of
even brighter times ahead. A marker of any community is the way in which we look after our most
vulnerable. This Christmas let us remind ourselves of our duty to others and the need to continue to
strive for that Aloysius generosity of spirit.
May I wish all our families a restful and joyous half-term break.

New Whole-School Reading campaign launched
We also learnt that 'calm' is used by many of our boys to express overall approval, going to show that education isn't a one-way street and we are often educated by what our students have to say.
The 'Reading is Calm' campaign is supported by various literacy initiatives that are applied across all year groups and help the students to expand their vocabulary and strengthen reading fluency.
Flying high: Year 7 triumph in athletics
Prince, Taylor, Kali and Isaac - all victorious in the 4x2 relay at the Islington schools' indoor athletic competition in early November. The Year 7 boys came first in the discipline, fired on by their coach Mr Kaya. Well done for putting in a quality effort boys!
The second autumn half-term has been another resounding success for the PE department and its various sports teams. Be in football, table tennis, basketball or athletics - the boys returned to the school with accolades, impressive score cards, podium places and even a taste of the big league (see below).
Workshop helps Year 10 to see maths afresh
Thinking outside the box - that was the motto of the latest maths enrichment session at Highgate School. The challenge for our Year 10 students was to find the answer to a calculation by trying out unconventional approaches and strategies. They left the session with a new mindset: there is often a multitude of ways to find a solution to a maths problem and creativity and an open mind are crucial ingredients. A big Thank You to our partners at Highgate School for putting on another inspiring enrichment lesson, allowing our boys to look at maths through fresh eyes.
End-of-term awards bring out sunny side in students
Christmas time - reward assembly time: there were big smiles and cheers all around in our main hall when Head of Year Mr Dapaah handed out sweets, treats and accolades to our Year 9 and 10 cohort. Pictured here is just a small snap selection of winners, with Chrishna from form group 9T emerging as the autumn term's most rewarded student. Well done to everybody putting in a top effort between September and now! Long may your commitment and dedication continue.
Christmas Dreams come true for our Young Gunners
We are very proud to be a member of the 8-week Young Gunners programme with Arsenal FC. As part of it, the club offers regular coaching sessions in the Arsenal Hub. The first-team players that turned up for this incredible Christmas surprise were Oleksandr Zinchenko, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Emile Smith Rowe. Needless to say that the boys were over the moon!
Cake Sale poster hits a sweet note
Our Year 7 students were organising a big cake sale for the last week of term to support the 2023 St Aloysius' Christmas charity drive. This Advent, our school community will raise funds for the homeless charity The Passage, the Catholic Children’s Society and CAFOD (supporting civilians affected by the Israeli-Palestinian crisis).
Can we just take a moment to marvel at Kai's mouthwatering poster! What an inviting and colourful little masterpiece! It certainly managed to draw in the crowds as the cake sale, together with other fundraising events, was an overwhelming success, collecting £157.34 for this year's Christmas charity causes.
Tae, Gabriel and Zayd shine in Speak Out contest
Massive thanks to Jack Petchey and Speakers' Trust for continuing to run this brilliant and self belief-boosting competition!
Aloysius First Team Ballers bring home victory
The first Basketball Academy team made up of Sixth Form students played an away game against Cohenel earlier this month, and won with an impressive score of 82 – 51.
We were pleased to report that the second team came up trumps as well: they played against St Charles' at home and won their game with a score of 63 – 60. Well done to the boys and their indefatigable coach Mr Akuffo!
Overall it's great to see that the aura that comes from being the official home of the mighty Islington Panthers basketball club is rubbing off on our younger players!
PR & Marketing guru talks about the power of creativity
During a very distinguished career, he's assumed the pivotal position of Global Entertainment Manager for Adidas UK, further solidifying his standing in the industry. Notably recognised as one of the 100 most influential Londoners by Puma in their recent publication "Who's Who," he has earned further acclaim for his groundbreaking contributions.
The students got a real flavour of what it means to find and unleash one's creative potential into the world. We are very thankful for the time he spent sharing his extraordinary and very inspirational story with us.
Renowned Solicitor ignites passion for legal professions
Our pastoral mentor Mr Thomas was delighted to welcome solicitor Garry Green KC to St Aloysius in November. Described as 'a passionate and committed advocate, fearlessly defending his clients’ right to a fair trial', Mr Green spoke passionately about his profession to our Sixth Form students, as well as a selection of boys from Key Stages 3 and 4. Some of them even got to put on traditional legal wear in the shape of a wig and a gown! The event was described as 'inspirational', 'informative' and even 'eye-opening' by some of the students, who got a real insight into a vocation that can make a huge difference to people's lives. KC stands for 'King's Council' by the way.
Bursting with Clubs: After-school Art meet successfully launched
Say Hi to our new Thursday afternoon art club, enthusiastically led by Mr Al-Asadi! The boys pictured are creating gruesome pencil drawings of ghosts, learning more about the all important balance between light and shade to create a dynamic effect. The atmosphere was calm and focused when we visited, with the students clearly enjoying a bit of creative down-time after a busy day at school.
We are positively bursting with new clubs this year, and our students are lapping up the refreshed offer. Chess, Robotics, Cooking, French and Boxing are proving extremely popular with our intake. Some of the clubs are organised in partnership with our private sector neighbours at Channing School.

Some impressions from the successful 2023 edition of our Sixth Form Open Evening. A trip down memory lane: son of former Aloysian shares precious heritage items
Ms Whyte called the historic delivery a 'treasure trove' and hopes to see the donor behind it for a tour of modern-day St Aloysius' College soon. We will keep you posted.
Lights are dimmed for science practical
'This was part of their required practicals for their GCSE exams,' science teacher Ms Mirabile explains: 'The students had been learning about so-called limiting factors: things that affect the rate of photosynthesis.'
Astounding fact: did you know that plants can only turn 0.1%-8% of the sunlight they receive into energy? It sounds like a small amount of food to survive on but plants seem to be wondrous creations...
Year 13 don white coats for 'famous' reaction test
The “clock reaction” is a reaction famous for its dramatic colourless-to-blue colour change. 'It's often used in chemistry courses to explore the rate at which reactions take place,' Ms Kisten points out.
The students clearly enjoyed the practical work, focusing on handling tiny amounts of substances that needed to be carefully dispensed.
PE leader Stewart Henderson waves goodbye to STA
After 11 years, Head of PE Stewart Henderson leaves St Aloysius College. He will be sorely missed, not just by the pupils who benefitted from his innovative and student-centred approach, but also his team of PE teachers and the wider school overall. "I loved teaching at Aloysius," Mr Henderson tells us. "The boys here are very keen to do well and full of energy - they rarely show up without their kit!' Asked what he would describe as the highlight of his more than a decade long run at the college, he points at the English Schools Football Finals in 2016. 'We scored 1:0 and became champions of England, fired on by 250 Aloysius students. A day I will never forget.' We wish Mr Henderson all the best for his future career and send massive thanks for his invaluabale contributions to St Aloysisus' College.
Piñata brings the autumn term - and 2023 - to a colourful end
Students from years 7 to 11 had great fun making piñatas after school as part of raising their
cultural awareness in Spanish. They used their creativity and imagination to create home-
made piñatas.
They had even more fun smashing the piñatas and grab the delicious sweets.
A piñata (/pɪnˈjɑːtə/, Spanish pronunciation: [piˈɲata]) is a container, often made of papier-
mâché, pottery, or cloth, that is decorated, filled with candy, and then broken as part of a
celebration. Piñatas are commonly associated with Mexico.
The idea of breaking a container filled with treats came to Europe in the 14th century. The
Spanish brought the European tradition to Mexico, although there were similar traditions
in Mesoamerica, such as the Aztecs' honoring the birthday of the god Huītzilōpōchtli in mid-
December. According to local records, the Mexican piñata tradition began in the town
of Acolman , just north of Mexico City, where piñatas were introduced for catechism
purposes as well as to co-opt the Huitzilopochtli ceremony.
Today, the piñata is still part of Mexican culture, the cultures of other countries in Latin
America, as well as the United States, but it has mostly lost its religious character.

Mobile phones stay in wallets during school day
Various studies have shown that mobile phones can interfere with students' academic success and mental wellbeing. This is why the Department for Education has issued a recommendation to ban them during the school day, which St Aloysius' College will follow from the beginning of the spring term. The students' phones will be safely stored in individual wallets and returned at the end of day. This measure will help everybody to have a more focused and rewarding school experience.
