SHES Weekly Update

The LCAP is a three-year plan that describes the goals, actions, services, and expenditures to support positive student outcomes that address state and local priorities. In addition, the LCAP allows local educational agencies (LEAs, aka Districts) to share their stories of how, what, and why programs and services are selected to meet their local needs.
The AUSD LCAP is focused on building continual improvement across all academic areas (Goal 1), while supporting the social-emotional needs of students and their families (Goal 2). A stronger focus is being placed on developing inclusive environments and continuing to enhance the programs offered across the district. Engagement with the community continues to grow, building on the needs and support identified during the pandemic. (Goal 3) The 2022-23 LCAP reflects the priorities of the district. Among these is responsiveness to the community, especially in health and wellness, and a continuing emphasis on teaching and learning strategies that will enhance student achievement for all students.
Goal #1 - Effective Instruction and Curriculum - Provide equitable access to high-quality classroom curriculum and instruction in an inclusive environment that promotes student success.
- Continuing to ensure that our curriculum is aligned to the state standards and pedagogical practices and that our staff are highly trained and credentialed remain top priorities for developing this goal.
Goal #2 - Safe and Respectful Environments - Ensure all school sites are safe and have healthy and welcoming climates for staff, students, and their families so that all students feel connected and are motivated to attend and ready to learn.
- Ensure students and staff feel safe on campus and learn in a healthy and welcoming environment, which will foster higher levels of achievement and staff satisfaction.
Goal #3 - Equitable and Culturally Responsible Systems - Ensure systems and processes eliminate barriers to student success and are equitable and culturally responsive to the needs of our students and their families.
- Creating an equitable and culturally responsive environment will ensure that all of our students feel valued and connected to school, which will also lead to higher levels of achievement.

Effective July 1, 1998, the state mandated an updated attendance accounting system. Schools no longer collect funding for ANY absence. Of course, if a child is ill, they should stay home. When your child misses school for any reason, he/she loses valuable learning time. Independent Study Contracts are available for students who will miss school for up to 10 days for any reason. Please contact the Attendance Clerk, Kelly Scanlan, in advance, for an Independent Study Contract. The contract describes work to be completed and it is the responsibility of the parent to see that the work is done before returning to school.
Tardiness to school also affects your child’s education. When a child is late, he/she misses instruction and interrupts the entire class upon arrival. Students are tardy if they are not in their seat ready to learn by 8:50AM. Students arriving late will need to check into the office for a tardy slip.
When your child is absent, please call our school office at 619-445-2977 within three days to clear the absence.
Valid reasons for an excused absence are dictated by California state law. For a list of these reasons please see the Alpine Union School District’s Annual Notification of Parents’ and Students’ Rights included with the yearly registration packet.
Casual Absences: Casual absences are considered unexcused. We are asking families to schedule any casual absences for days when our campus is closed.
Illness: If your student is ill with a fever and/or vomiting, they are to remain home for 24 hours after the fever/vomiting ceases.
Lice: After a student has had head lice, parents are required to bring their students to the school office the next day after treatment and cleansing so that a health office check can be completed before a student is returned to the classroom.
Please report communicable diseases to our office. State law requires students displaying certain contagious/communicable diseases be excluded from school until appropriate medical treatment has been given. If antibiotics are required, the student may return to school after 24 hours on medication. Communicable Diseases/Contagious Diseases can include but are not limited to: Covid-19, Chicken Pox, Streptococcal (strep), Scarlet Fever, Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye), Head Lice, Impetigo, and Scabies.
Truancy
Students are required by law to be at school and their parents will be held responsible. Actions ranging from a parent reminder letter, referral to the School Attendance Review Team (SART) and/or Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) through the San Diego County Juvenile Court System are mandated by law. A student is considered truant when their attendance reflects a combination of THREE or more unexcused absences and/or unexcused tardies over 30 minutes in one school year.
Truancy and Action
A combination of three Unexcused Absences and/or Unexcused Tardy over 30 minutes during one school year: a First Notification of Truancy letter is sent home with a copy placed in the student’s permanent file.
If a combination of Unexcused Absences and/or Unexcused Tardy over 30 minutes continues during one school year: the Second Notification of Truancy letter is sent home with a mandatory appointment for the parents/guardians and student with the School Attendance Review Team (SART) for supports at Shadow Hills School. A copy of the letter is placed in the student’s permanent file.
If a combination of Unexcused Absences and/or Unexcused Tardy over 30 minutes continues to occur after the implementation of supports: the Third Notification of Truancy letter is sent home with a mandatory appointment for the parents/guardians and student with the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) at the county level. A copy of the letter is placed in the student’s permanent file.
- Chromebook Pick Up - If you have not gotten an opportunity to get a Chromebook, please complete the insurance paperwork linked below and give it to your child's teacher. We will then coordinate the Chromebook pick up.
- Chromebook Insurance Form and Agreement - Please click here for the 2022-2023 Chromebook Protection Plan and Guidelines. Each student must have one of these forms filled out, payment received, and signed before receiving a Chromebook to take home.
