Community Partnerships with LASD for Mental Health
With an increase in mental health needs throughout our district this year, LASD is thankful for its partnerships with Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC) and El Camino Healthcare District to ensure the health and well-being of all of our students. With this community support, LASD has a total of 27 adults offering direct mental health services to LASD students across our 9 campuses.
This year, LASD has entered into an even more robust partnership with CHAC to provide top notch mental health services to our students at all our elementary schools. LASD’s school psychologists provide on site mental health support that is immediate, responsive, and confidential. However, sometimes students need more than immediate care or have non-urgent social emotional problems. This is where CHAC’s partnership has been essential. LASD school psychologists and CHAC work collaboratively to identify student needs and provide the appropriate mental health support on site. The CHAC partnership also ensures seamless coordination between school site care and off site care, as well as small group and whole class social emotional lessons in the classroom.
LASD works with El Camino Healthcare District at our junior high campuses. El Camino Healthcare District, through a grant, partially funds four therapists at our two junior high schools to help school psychologists meet our older students’ mental health needs.
LASD continues to seek additional partnerships to support the diverse mental health needs of our students. For more information, please check out item I.1 on our online agenda.
Expanded Learning Opportunities for LASD Students
In line with new requirements set forth by the State of California, LASD continues to improve its Expanded Learning Opportunities Programs (ELOP) for students who qualify for free and reduced price meals, are foster youth or English Language Learners (otherwise known as unduplicated pupils). Mandated by the state, ELOP requires school districts to offer before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of students through hands-on, engaging learning experiences.
These programs are intended to be student-centered, results driven and complement, but not replicate, learning activities in the regular school day and school year. In the coming school year, ELOP will be free of charge to TK through 6th grade students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and/or are foster youth.
To provide these programs to our TK students in the current school year, LASD partnered with the YMCA, Champions and Children's House. LASD plans to begin new partnerships as the program expands. LASD will contact families of students who qualify for ELOP throughout the school year to make them aware of these services and how to sign up.
For more information check out item I.2 on our online agenda.
Independent Audit and Citizens Advisory Committee on Finance Report
The annual independent audit of the Los Altos School District showed a healthy financial picture for the district and sound financial accounting practices. In addition, the volunteer-led CACF presented its annual report to the Board. The report noted that LASD's financial position is strong, yet high inflation and interest rates present risks. In addition, the LASD parcel tax--which supports classroom instruction and academic programs--is due to expire in 2025, unless it is renewed by local voters.
To review the full report, check out items I.3 and I.4. on the online agenda.
