4th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back –
What a wonderful time we have had studying invertebrates! From creepy, crawlies (worms) to the super strange ocean creatures (squids, starfish), we were able to see a wide variety of creatures that are part of the organisms without backbones. We finished with Echinodermata, and the starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers were quite a mix of the very beautiful and very strange. In Unit 2 we will begin exploring how plants and animals interact. (See Looking Ahead below)
Last Week’s Lessons: Unit 1, Lesson 6: Echinoderms and Unit 1 Review and Unit Test
Lesson 6 Vocabulary: echinoderms, radial symmetry, tube feet, madreporite, regeneration
Unit 1 Test Vocabulary: regenerate, budding, mantle, segmented, roundworms, flatworms, eyespots, exoskeleton, jointed legs, tentacles, nostrils, mollusks, arthropods, cnidarians, sponges,
Looking Ahead -
Great job in Unit 1, guys! Now we get to expand our study to include the interaction between plants and animals. We’ll start in Lesson 1 with the individuals within an ecosystem and their place in a population. We’ll move into the competition among different populations for survival in Lesson 2 which will allow us to explore more into the balance of resources within an ecosystem. It’s getting very interesting!
Assignments for the week of Sept. 17-21: Unit 2, Lesson 1: Populations, & Lesson 2: Competition
Key Vocabulary: populations, community, population boundary, population density, emigration, immigration, population sample, clumped, uniform spacing, random spacing, resource, limiting factors, competition
Creature of the week – This week I am challenging students to investigate the Opalescent Nudibranch (Hermissenda opalescens), a very beautiful sea creature found in the Pacific coastline of North America. Nudibranches are some of the most brightly colored ocean organisms – far different from the snails and slug found on land!

We've listened to your concerns and have made some adjustments to the schedule to help spread your workload. You will notice a new time for music and art, as well as an additional help session that is focused on math and ELA. These adjustments should allow you more time to complete lessons through the week and to attend The Hive.
