ECISD AVID in Action

We've had two amazing and inspiring AVID Summer Institutes filled with new learning, motivational speakers and site team building! We are well into the new school year and it promises to be a great one! Welcome back AVID students and Rock Star AVID Teachers!

Complex Community Federal Credit Union and TownSquare Media have partnered with ECISD AVID to bring Lemonade Day to Odessa. Lemonade Day is a free, community-wide event designed to teach kids how to start and operate their own business - a lemonade stand! Over 200 stands have been registered and will be set up all over Odessa! Stop by and buy some lemonade from these rising entrepreneurs on Saturday, October 3rd from 10 am to 3 pm. Hays Elementary in Odessa hosted the first ever AVID Central Division District Directors Workshop in West Texas. AVID Texas state office staff and district directors from this area had an opportunity to tour Hays Elementary and visit a few of their classrooms. This is Hays first year to have K-5 AVID and were excited to showcase their campus. Everyone was impressed by the level of teaching and learning observed. Hays teachers consistently incorporate WICOR in their lessons for high engagement and rigorous instruction. In addition, the school's college going culture was amazing to see! Congratulations Hays for a fantastic showcase!!

WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading) provides a learning support structure that teachers use to guide students in comprehending complex concepts across disciplines.

The 'O' in WICOR is Organization. In AVID, organization goes beyond managing materials. Organization includes goal-setting, time-management, self-monitoring, and project-planning.

The AVID binder becomes the student's primary organizational tool. Each teacher, campus or site-team decides what contents are required to be in the student binder and then develops procedures to hold students accountable. When short on time, teachers can use quick binder check strategies to ensure students are utilizing the binder as a tool for learning.

Another important component in organization is the agenda planner. Students are expected to write in their planner on a daily basis and use this tool for goal-setting and self-monitoring. Also, the agenda planner serves as a home-school communication tool. There are a number of strategies to help support daily planner usage.
