Good afternoon Brookview families,
This is it, we have made it through another school year! Let me first say thank you for accepting me and trusting me this year. As the school principal I have a tremendous responsibility to make sure that your kids are safe and learning at a high level. In addition to those priorities, I am here to make sure that you are taken care of as well. I want to shout out every parent that took the time to call me directly or visit the school and meet with me in my office. Thank you. It meant so much to me that you trusted me enough to reach out and share your concerns. It was my hope that every time you visited Brookview, you were greeted, felt respected and felt heard. I will be here serving the students and families of Brookview again next year and if i didn’t get the chance to talk to you this year, I hope we can visit in the future.
Let me also say that this year was exceptional for many reasons. Mostly because of how amazing our students are! I’ve had the honor to meet so many talented students this year and I am truly grateful. I’m going to miss our 4th graders, they were the leaders of the school. But I look forward to new students accepting the mantle of leadership and stepping up to the challenge.
To the staff at Brookview, you have been wonderful this year. To the Brookview Bulldogs that have stood tall in the face of change, I thank you and can’t wait to begin again next year. Enjoy your summer break. As always, stay safe and stay connected!

You all deserve a round of applause! You have been instrumental in keeping your students engaged and focused during Learn at Home. Thank you so much. I just needed to say that first, now a few announcements.
Announcements:
1. Brookview staff will be packing up student items to prepare for distribution starting on Wednesday, June 3rd from 12-6pm for last names A-M, Thursday, June 4th from 12-6pm for last names N-Z, and Friday, June 5th 9am-12pm for any family that couldn't make the first two days.
2. If you purchased Spring pictures from LifeTouch, they will be distributed with student material bags on the scheduled pick up days.
3. Students who are currently in Kindergarten through 11th grade will be allowed to use their district assigned device over the summer. If you do not need the device or will not be attending Brookview next year, you can turn your device in during materials pick the first week of June or Monday - Friday from 11:00 - 1:00 at the Walker Career Center, Door 70. When turning in your device, you need to include the iPad or Chromebook, the charger, chrome book plastic shell, and carrying case.
4. Early in June, we will be mailing grade level summer learning packets to all students in grades K-8. These packets will focus on essential math and reading skills as well as social emotional skills. Students will receive an incentive for completing their packet upon returning it to school in the fall.
4th Grade Promotion Ceremonies
Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, friends and family that tuned in for the 4th grade virtual ceremony this morning. It was really cool seeing the "fan clubs" for students. I hope you understand just how great our kids are and know that we have all cherished the time that we've spent with them this year!

Registration for Kindergarten and Preschool in Warren Township begins on Monday, May 4th. There will be a live webinar May 4th at 7pm. Principals and teachers will present information about Kindergarten and Preschool programs in Warren, demonstrate information about how to register online, and conduct a live question & answer session with audience members. Children must be age 5 on or before September 1 to register for Kindergarten and age 3 on or before September 1 to register for Preschool.

I am asking that in an effort to maintain effective and timely communication that you please update your email addresses and phone numbers. Technology Access for Learn at Home
Learn at Home activities will provide students access to both offline and online activities. Additionally, devices will be used to connect with teachers virtually. If you have questions about Learning at Home or need technology support, please visit our eLearning/Learn at Home website for information about our Learn at Home plan, technology access resources, and Frequently Asked Questions, or contact our eLearning Hotline (317-608-0545).
The device and charger will need to be returned in the same condition it was received to the school at the conclusion of the Learn at Home window. If the event that the device and charger are not received or returned damaged, your family will be charged for repair/replacement. Any device unaccounted for past the return date will be remotely disabled and all data erased.

Update!!!
To provide increased quantities of meals and to lessen the need to travel on a daily basis, we are adjusting and expanding our food outreach program. We have added a Wednesday evening food outreach site at Post Road Christian Church and now Lakeside Elementary from 5:30pm - 7:00pm. Wednesday locations will distribute a total of 8 meals. Starting next week, we will be distributing 6 meals on Tuesdays and 8 meals on Fridays at now 11 locations from 11:00 -1:00. Eastridge and Hawthorne will be added as Tuesday / Friday locations.

School Closing Information
Gov. Holcomb's announcement means that MSD of Warren Townships schools will now be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
A web page has been created to provide resources and to organize our communications to our staff and families. I encourage you to visit this page if you have questions. Dr. Hanson has asked our district leaders to provide frequent and formal updates to our building leaders and other district personnel to ensure that our information is consistent, accurate, and helpful to the day to day operations of providing a safe environment for teaching and learning.
Preventive Measures
In all of our conversations with local officials and the guidance received from state and federal entities, practicing good hygiene is still one of the best preventive measures we can do to lessen the chances of becoming infected with the virus.
- Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and warm water
- Use alcohol based hand sanitizer in between hand washing
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth
- Use social distancing and limit handshakes and hugs
- Stay home when you are sick and fever free for at least 24 hours
- Clean and disinfect frequently. Be sure to follow the guidelines of the cleaning product to maximize its cleaning effectiveness.
As a district, we have placed an emphasis on increased cleaning protocols in high traffic and high contact areas, including transportation.
- Additional cleaning supplies have been sent to schools.
- Busses are being disinfected as much as possible in between and after routes.
- High traffic and high contact areas in our cafeterias are being cleaned and disinfected throughout the day.

Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning Emphasis
At Brookview Elementary, we want our students to be strong readers! There are 5 major components to reading. I will be sharing information on each of the 5 components of reading over the next several weeks. Let's start with fluency.
What Is Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read "like you speak." Hudson, Lane, and Pullen define fluency this way: "Reading fluency is made up of at least three key elements: accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression." Non-fluent readers suffer in at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, they read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.
Many researchers have found that fluency is highly correlated with reading comprehension—that is, when a student reads fluently, that student is likely to comprehend what he or she is reading.
So how do we teach it?
Teacher Modeling
Examples of teacher modeling include:
- Teacher-assisted reading
- Peer-assisted reading
- Audio-assisted reading
Key point: Teacher modeling involves more than just listening to someone else read. Students must be actively involved 100 percent of the time and in a multi-sensory way.
Parents, you play a major role here as well. Allowing your children consistent opportunities to read to you is key. Every night, have your children read to you. This helps your child become a strong reader!

Outbreaks of novel virus infections among people are always of public health concern. While the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers this to be a serious public health threat, based on current information, the immediate health risk from to the general American public is considered low at this time. That said, we will continue to take proactive preparedness measures as more cases are likely to be identified in the United States.
Our school district is working closely with state and local health departments to review and
update emergency preparation plans in the event of a pandemic. Our Operations Department
continues to work diligently to ensure a cleanly environment for both students and staff. In the event of a confirmed case in the MSD of Warren Township, appropriate measures would be taken with the guidance of the health department. At this time, the MSD Warren Township will monitor students using normal school procedures to assess symptoms. Patients with confirmed 2019-nCoV infection have reported mild to severe respiratory symptoms, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. We continue to
encourage all student and staff to practice good heath hygiene to prevent the spread of any
illness, including viruses. These steps include:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Stay home when you are sick – fever free for 24 hours without use of medication
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
2019/2020 PESTICIDE NOTIFICATION REGISTRY
The Indiana Pesticide Review Board has regulations that impact how school
corporations may use pesticides on school grounds. MSD Warren Township follows
these guidelines and we are inviting parents and guardians to join our Pesticide
Notification Registry. By signing up for this registry, you will be notified via email at
least 48 hours prior to a pesticide application at your child’s school, subject to certain
exceptions. You will be invited to sign up for this notification each school year.

INTRODUCING RAPTOR VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Every visitor who enters our school will be asked to present a state of federal ID, such as a Driver’s License, that will be scanned into the Raptor System. Once the visitor has been approved, the office staff will enter the reason, destination of the visit and the Raptor System will print a photo ID visitor badge. If for any reason a parent or guardian does not have a U.S. government-issued ID, the staff member can use any form of ID and manually enter the person’s name into the Raptor System.
A photo ID visitor badge is not required for those who visit our schools to drop off an item or pick-up paperwork at the front desk. Further, they may drop off their items(s) or remain in the waiting area until their student is available. Please be aware that current practices established in each building will remain in effect.
The safety of our students is our highest priority. The Raptor Visitor Management System will provide us with a consistent process of knowing who is in our buildings at all times as well as a tool to identify those individuals who may present a danger to our students and staff.

MSD of Warren Township has created a comprehensive strategic plan based on community input that will ensure all students and staff have the conditions necessary to develop and apply Journey of a Graduate (JoG) skills and dispositions. The Journey of a Graduate skills are a set of 6 skills and dispositions that have been identified by our community needed for success in and out of school. The JoG skills are Critical Thinking, Citizenship, Communication, Collaboration, Content Knowledge, and Resilience. These JoG skills will serve as the foundation of the district strategic plan.

Warren Township School District has a new app and website! The purpose of the app and website is to provide regular updates through the live feed, district news, and

The app includes easy access to the weekly breakfast and lunch menu, staff contacts, district documents, bullying and safety reporting form, and much much more. LUNCH MENU
Warren Township Schools, in partnership with Chartwells K12, publish breakfast and lunch menus through Nutrislice - an interactive website and a free smartphone app. Our school community can access our menus anywhere, anytime! Click here for the menus or download the menu Nutrislice app.
Parents and students at Chartwells districts across the country have access to descriptions, images, and nutrition and allergy information for all menu items. Our menus are also accessible on the web, mobile devices, tablets, and as a traditional PDF that can be printed and put on the fridge. We have developed our own portfolio of beautiful photos of our recipes and created exciting content and nutrition education that engages both students and parents!
