Earlier this year a bill passed officially designating September as “American Founders and Constitution Month” with September 17 as “Constitution Day” in the State of Utah! While all state residents are encouraged to learn more about the Consitution this month, schools are specifically encouraged to observe by reading directly from the United States Constitution and other primary sources, and to teach the governing principles found in the United States Constitution. The Provo City School District Department of Title I and Title III is now offering a competency-based ESL Endorsement for all interested teachers. Participants will complete courses in Canvas to demonstrate competency in the five Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) domains: language acquisition; cultural diversity; planning and implementing instruction; assessment and evaluation; and professionalism and leadership. Courses are self-paced; it is anticipated that the full endorsement will take approximately two years to complete. Courses will be open beginning on September 1. The 95 Percent Multisyllable Routine is an easy to use routine to help teachers provide direct, explicit instruction on the six syllable types students encounter when reading larger words! The program comes with classroom-ready multisyllable decoding lessons, visuals, and manipulatives to help students make quick work of reading big words! Professional Outreach Program in the Schools (POPS), managed by the Utah State Board of Education and sponsored by the Utah State Legislature, supports arts education by bringing professional arts organizations’ educational programs to schools for free or subsidized costs. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx, the first U.S. mission to collect a sample from an asteroid, will return to Earth on Sept. 24, 2023, with material from asteroid Bennu.
