Canaan Middle School Update
December 15th, 2023
Principal Corner
Dear Canaan Middle School Families,
It's been an exciting week filled with spirit and enthusiasm here at Canaan Middle School! Students have participated in various spirit days, bringing positive energy to each day!
Looking ahead to next week, we have an exciting Team Building and Activity Day planned for Wednesday. Students will have the opportunity to connect with peers from different grade levels as they form mixed-grade groups. Together, they will engage in team-building activities, fostering collaboration, communication, and a sense of camaraderie. Additionally, students will channel their creativity by crafting cards for residents in local nursing homes, spreading joy and kindness during this festive season while enjoying some hot chocolate donated by Smiles to Love and coordinated by our Canaan PTO.
In the afternoon, the excitement continues as students compete in a series of fun games in the gym. This not only promises to be a lot of fun but also provides an opportunity for students to showcase their teamwork and sportsmanship skills. We believe these activities will leave a lasting positive impact on our school culture.
As we approach the winter break, we want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic holiday season filled with joy, laughter, and relaxation. We hope you make wonderful memories with family and friends.
Upon our return from the break, we will be wrapping up the first semester. It's incredible how quickly the time has flown, and we are proud of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our students throughout these past months.
Remember, school resumes on January 4th, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming everyone back for the start of the new year. Until then, enjoy the break, stay safe, and have a happy New Year!
Warm regards,
Mr. Walter, Principal
Canaan Middle School
5th Grade Update
Science - Students are amazed at the growth progress of their ecosystems! We are collecting data weekly on how much our plants grow and “shuffling” around the ecosystems on the shelves to ensure all plants receive equal amounts of sunlight/energy each day. Students learned about invasive species and the effects they have on an ecosystem. We will continue our life science unit by discovering symbiotic relationships among organisms in a particular region/biome.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our unit on the Mayan Civilization before winter break. We will take the test over everything we have learned when we return. We will be moving right along into the Aztec Civilization at the beginning of January! Have a great break and relax as much as possible! :)
Math: We have continued our decimal introductory topics (place, value, expanded form). As we progress, we will work with comparing and ordering decimals before we go into the decimal operations (starting with adding/subtracting). Separately, we have begun working with 25 geometric vocabulary terms. We have created flashcards, played games, and sorted by categories to help learn these words. In our December Number Corner, we are specifically focused on the quadrilaterals and their attributes.

Talking Points
We are excited to share that our staff members will be using a safe and easy to
use two way communication tool called TalkingPoints to communicate with
families. Families have three easy ways to use TalkingPoints to communicate
with their children’s teachers for free! You can use text message, download the
app or use it on the web at https://talkingpts.org/families/. Once you log in to
Talking Points, you should be able to see your students and teachers.
