Welcoming 6th Graders to the DMS Family
8th Grade WEB Leaders
Our 8th grade WEB leaders spent some extra time this summer preparing to welcome our 6th graders to Depew Middle School. The W.E.B leaders gave up three days of summer break to plan, prepare and facilitate the 6th grade orientation program. Each W.E.B. leader called 6th grade students and families to welcome and personally invite them to the 6th grade Orientation event.
The 8th grade W.E.B. leaders ran 6th grade orientation this year. The orientation was a success, and the 6th graders had fun. The orientation started with team building activities, led by Mr. Cena, Mrs. Banasik, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Teresa, and Mrs. Kuwik. The 6th graders got to meet their W.E.B. leaders for the year! They did some fun activities, and got to learn about the students who were in their group. They also learned about what the Middle School has to offer, and how they can get involved, and have a great 6th grade year!

6th Grade Orientation
Sixth grade orientation was a cheerful and exciting event for the Depew Middle School. It started off as the sixth graders walked into the gymnasium. All of the WEB leaders lined up cheering and screaming, blowing bubbles, and handing out high fives to the sixth graders as they walked to the tables with their name tags. They took their seats in the bleachers as the teachers talked about the curriculum, and how to behave and act. The students did hand clapping games and line games about their lives. Also, they formed mini circles around the gym and answered questions like, ¨If aliens take your house what will you take from your house so your family will be safe?¨ as an example. After, they walked over to the Middle School for more games with their W.E.B. leaders. They did silly little games and went on a scavenger hunt. They headed to the high school gymnasium where they got their schedule and got ready for dismissal back to their parents. 6th graders were then able to buy locker ladders and locks, and were able to drop off supplies in their lockers. The sixth grade orientation was an active event and most of the sixth graders had fun seeing their friends, doing the activities, and getting to know their W.E.B. leaders.

7th Grade Team Building Day
Our 7th grade class took part in a Team Building day on Friday, September 15th. The day was filled with several fun and engaging activities. Team Building Day was a day we got to make new friends and have new experiences. We got to do a variety of fun things. We went to the gym where we participated in fun games that helped us work as a team. In one activity, we had to work together to get from one side of the gym to the other without touching the floor. We also played a fun game of tug of war, which also helped us work as a team to win. After this we learned how we are responsible for setting goals for ourselves to help us achieve things in and outside of school. These were called SMART goals. We then went on a messy adventure creating egg carriers that would hopefully protect our eggs when they were dropped from the ceiling. For our egg carrier invention we had to create posters showing the name, the price, the slogan, and the logo for our product and present it as a group. We also made string blankets to help children in need of a warm blanket. We made it out of two cloths that we cut and tied together in small groups. We donated the blankets to Oishei Children's Hospital as a way for our class to give back to the community. This was a great day for the 7th grade class!

The team building day was excellent. I believe that the egg drop challenge really helped with teamwork and working together. Goal setting was a great activity. We think setting goals and working out how to achieve them is great for our minds and goal setting in the future. Another one of the activities was the fun and cooperative games we did in the gym. We did the floor lava challenge, you needed to work with your team to get across to the other side. Along with the hula hoop challenge, where we had to hold hands and then get through the hula hoop. All of the games used teamwork and were fun.

W.E.B Wednesday's
CHALK THE WALK
Our first W.E.B. Wednesday was a huge success as students spread words of respect, responsibility and kindness through their artwork. Each homeroom received chalk, and they were able to create a beautiful sidewalk mural using 3 sidewalk squares, chalk and their imagination. The eighth grade W.E.B. leaders took on a leadership role with the sixth graders and guided them on creating art with chalk on the school sidewalk. Each 6th grade homeroom got to see their W.E.B. leaders again and brainstormed ideas to put on their assigned sidewalk squares. There were four W.E.B. leaders assigned to each 6th grade homeroom, and they W.E.B. leaders led this activity.
Students from all grades participated and really showed their creative sides. They worked together to brainstorm ideas about how to show the values of Depew Middle School. The artwork on the sidewalk really shows what DMS is all about…being kind, being responsible, and respecting ourselves, our teachers and each other. Students had lots of fun being with their friends, drawing, talking, and creating. It was another way for us to connect with our peers. We were proud of the work and the positive message that were created!

DMS Wildcats - Modified Sports Teams Start Their Seasons Strong
Our DMS Wildcat's are taking the fall season by storm.
The modified football team is off to a hot start, currently standing at 2-0! They started off the season with a big win against Alden, and just recently had a come-from-behind victory against Pembroke. With the offensive line paving the way for a strong rushing attack, the Wildcats look to continue their unbeaten streak in their next game against JFK. This is one of our larger teams consisting of 40 players who have been dedicated to delivering their best efforts each week.
Our cheerleaders are full of energy this season supporting our school. The Cheer team is excited to learn and execute new skills getting themselves ready for competition season. Their hard work and dedication to their team and sport shines through in every practice! The girls are currently getting routine ready to perform their skills at our DMS Pep Rally and the homecoming game against Lancaster Middle School. They are a great group of girls who support one another and increase the spirit throughout the school.
Watch out for our modified soccer teams. The girls soccer team started their season against East Aurora and Springville last week and this week they took on Eden and Alden displaying great effort in all their games. The girls soccer team has been working hard to improve their passing, shooting and kicking skills and getting better everyday. The girls like to support each other both on and off the field and are looking forward to winning their first game and their upcoming team Mac & Cheese Night.
The boy's modified soccer team has been hard at work practicing since the last week of August. Their coach has goals and a motto for this year: Improving the 3 T's - Team building, Talking (communication) and Trying our best. We have a solid squad with 25 players participating. Their first scrimmage was a huge success with a 4-0 win over Lackawanna. Their defense and goaltending was solid and their offense and midfielders worked well together. Overall it was an outstanding effort. The season officially took off this week with a game at Alden, Springville and Holland. Throughout this season the boys soccer team is looking forward to competing, developing their skills, building character, making everlasting friendships and having fun!
The girls modified volleyball team currently holds a 2-2 record, serving up wins over JFK and Cleveland Hill. The 2023-2024 team is a young group. Alongside our 8th graders we have thirteen 7th grade girls who are working hard and progressing in their skills everyday. The Lady Wildcats will finish out their season with a string of home games in October against East Aurora, Eden, Alden, and Springville!
We also have several 7th and 8th grade students who are playing sports at the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. We are proud of all of our fall athletes and what they have accomplished so far this season!
