We, at PCSC, have great pride in our Community Values. Each month at Brentwood we learn about that month's value. As a look ahead toward the beginning of school we'd like to give you a preview of September's Value: Dignity/Self-Esteem.

National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign in the United States which was founded in 2006. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. Please read the tips below taken from the website of the National Crime Prevention Council.

Bullying – What Is It and What Can Parents Do?

Bullying is defined as fighting, threatening, name-calling, teasing, or excluding someone repeatedly and over time.

Parents can play a central role to preventing bullying and stopping it when it happens. Here are a few things you can do:

• Teach kids to solve problems without using violence and praise them when they do.
  

• Give children positive feedback when they behave well to help build their self-esteem.

• Ask your child about their day. Listen to them talk about school, social events, their classmates, and any problems they have.

• Encourage your child to help others who need it.

• Don’t bully your children or bully others in front of them. If your children see you hit, ridicule, or gossip about someone else, they are more likely to do so themselves.

If Your Child Is Bullied

There are warning signs that may indicate if your child is being bullied. They include: withdrawal, a loss of friends, a drop in grades, a loss of interest in activities he or she previously enjoyed, torn clothing, bruises, and/or a need for extra money or supplies. If you think your child is being bullied or if your child has told you that he or she is being bullied, you can help. Parents are often the best resource to build a child’s self-confidence and teach him or her how to best solve problems. Here are a few ways you can help:

• Talk to your child’s teacher.

• Teach your child nonviolent ways to deal with bullies, like walking away, playing with friends, or talking it out.

• Help your child act with self-confidence. Help them practice walking upright, looking people in the eye, and speaking clearly.

• Don’t encourage your child to fight. This could lead to him or her getting hurt, getting in trouble, and having more serious problems with the bully.

• Involve your child in activities outside of school. This way he or she can make friends in a different social circle.

When Your Child is a Bully

It’s hard for any parent to believe that their child is a bully, but sometimes it happens. But just because your child bullies doesn’t mean that he or she will buy forever. Parents are one of the best resources to help their child stop bullying and start interacting positively with their classmates. Here are some things you can do to stop your child from bullying:

• Take it seriously. Don’t treat bullying as a passing phase. Even if you’re not worried about long-lasting effects on your child, another child is being hurt.

• Talk to you child to find out why he or she is bullying. Often, children bully when they feel sad, angry, lonely, or insecure, and many times major changes at home or school may bring on these feelings.

• Help build empathy for other and talk to your child about how it feels to be bullied.

• Ask yourself if someone at home is bullying your child. Often, kids who bully are bullied themselves by a parent, family member, or another adults.

It takes school and home working together to stop bullying before it starts, and also to address it appropriately when it does happen. If you would like more information about bullying you can visit http://www.stompoutbullying.org.

Have you moved recently? If your child rides the bus, we want to make sure your child is picked up on schedule and dropped off safely to your home. If you have changed addresses since you did the online registration in PowerSchool, we will need to have you fill out a transportation form so we can pass the information to the transportation department so your child's bus route can be updated.

You can find this form on our website. From the main page, click MENU, and then DOCUMENTS. Please return this form to the main office as soon as you can, so the appropriate changes can be made. Call us if you have any questions!

Parents are now able to do Year Round Updates in PowerSchool with the new Online Registration, now that “Returning Registration” has closed.

The type of updates the parents can do are:

• Emergency Contact changes
  
• Phone changes
  
• Email addresses
  

The types of updates Parents cannot do:

• Student address changes
  
• Parent names changes

Note: Parent changes must be done from a web browser, and not the PowerSchool app,

Simply sign into your parent power school account, and click on the “Year Round Update” link (see below) to update data in real time.

For safety purposes, If you drop your student(s) off in the morning before school in the car rider lane, please do not allow your children to exit your car until you are past the front awning. The staff members on duty cannot see children past the front awning and we want to ensure the safety of everyone. Thank you for your cooperation with this procedure.

Plainfield Youth Basketball Club will be having their annual tryouts for boys in grades 2-6. Please visit their website for time and information. All participants must pre-register at pybchoops.leagueapps.com.

The Sunday Showcase program is a baseball development program for the past 7+ years in Plainfield. These clinics allow the coaches to see your son play baseball on a field before tryouts. This helps build two teams per age group. Sunday Showcase tryouts will be in late February or early March of 2018. The games will be played in April & May on Sundays and some Saturdays. 6 year olds are welcome to try out for the 7 U team.

Please send lunch money in a marked envelope with your child to school when needed. This can be in the form of cash or check made out to "Brentwood Cafeteria". You may also fund your child's lunch account using eFunds or MyLunchMoney.com. Look for student sign up information on these online options to come home with your child the first week of school.

Would you like to help out in your child's classroom, go on field trips, or attend field trips? If so - our teachers can't wait to have you help out! But before you do there are some simple steps you need to complete first...

1. Every volunteer, field trip chaperone, or classroom party volunteer must have a background check completed through PCSC. Many of your completed these forms when you enrolled your children online this year as the forms were included. If you still need to fill one out for this year please contact the office well in advance of your first visit to do this.

2. Every volunteer must also complete a PCSC Confidentiality Volunteer Agreement in the office upon their first time volunteering each year.

3. Every visitor to our building during school hours must check-in at the reception desk and be entered into our Safe Visitor system. The very fist time you visit you must have your Driver's License or State Issued ID Card which will be scanned into the computer. Most likely you will NOT need it again upon subsequent visits because the system stores your information. (However, should a glich appear in the system and it is required of you it would be more convenient on you if you had your ID with you.) Every visitor is photographed at the same time they are checked in upon their first visit also.

Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to learn this software during our second year of its use. We know your first priority, as ours in the office, is the safety of all of our children.

(Lunch Room visitors will sit at a specially designated table with only their child and therefore will only be checked into our Safe Visitor system (#3) above.) They are not required to complete steps 1-2 above unless they want to volunteer in a classroom or small group setting, chaperone a field trip, or help out at PTO run classroom parties or events.)
